    Hello, Apologies taking important time and gratefulness extended reading forum, have an easy Q for science people.

    For relativity, would it make sense to set up a phone cal and wrap it around the world a few times, hundred or so, with a speaker receiving and sending the initial call, and at the speed of light if the final destination has no drawl in the speech, there would then be no dilation contraction or rules with what we have been told with time and relativity ? ( to intoduce myself I am in the arts since very young and enjoy the idea of problems, so now learning some of the science of what I can slowly understand, also enjoy all the quantum determinism and probability issues.     I don't really understand the question.

    If you transmitted a signal round the world at the speed of light, it would take about just under 1/8th of a second. (A signal in a wire would be a lot slower.) So if you sent that signal round the world 100 times it would take about 75 seconds.

    I don't see where relativity comes into it...

    Not quite sure I understand your question, but:
    Wouldn't work.
    The drawl is contained in the signal, therefore that's what comes out at the other end.

    The GPS system proves the time-dilation predicted by both Special and General Relativity. So do hundreds of other experiments.

    Thankyou and to all the entries for reading.

    - I understand time slows down with motion. For example the thought exp of the monkey travelling at great speeds and other examples where Person A is on earth and person B takes off in a rocket ship going at the speed of light, time issues.

    - or I heard the very sohpisticated german clocks were put on very fast planes and time was seen to slow down. ( clock on plane relative to clock on land.

    - if above is true, there are two times, one for A and one for B. B returns having clicked less or aged less due to the speed through space relative to A on earth.

    - if B got into a rocket ship and went around the earth at the speed of light, in time B would return having experienced less time, relative to A

    - if we could talk to B from A's position on earth, the voice would be a drawl, slower.

    - whats the difference in above with B getting on a rocket ship, or broadcasting ? Iow how is broadcasting any different then the hypothetical ship and then, shouldn't there be a drawl in the voice ? Shouldn't the voice patterns due to the motion show differently. ( where a sufficient set up could be worked out, the clocks mentioned earlier are showing a change due to the motion, but they don't really specify other then what they physically click -what that change in fact is representing.

    Addition to last and thanks for patience, I don't have all the right language down , maybe this will help.


    Can we confirm the experiment I heard of with the German sophisticated clock on the fast jet, and clock on ground.

    if so... if there is indeed a slowing of time as noted in the sophisticated clocks proving relativity, shouldn't records of the pilots voice show differently when communicating to the stationary airport ? shouldn't the patterns show the pilots experience, in keeping with the results of the clocks ? Shoudn't his voice be clicking slower ( speech) and be noted on the stationairy airports read out on high scrutiny?

    The difference is that when you send a signal from A to B, there is a difference in speed between the sender and the receiver (in the language of relativity, they are in different "frames of reference"). It is the fact that the rate at which time passes for A (as perceived by B) is slower that causes this.

    However, if you just transmit a signal from one place to another on Earth, then the two people are travelling at the same speed (they are in the same frame of reference) so there is no difference. It is not the speed at which the signal travels, it is the relative speed between sender and receiver.

    Note that one place where this is a real effect that has to be taken into account is in GPS systems. A GPS receiver has to take into account the difference in time and distance measured by each satellite (because of its speed and altitude) in order to correctly triangulate its position.
