As in, which color (or type of) light would provide the best low-intensity illumination of one's surroundings without the glare that is present under bright white light? Also, if their are multiple optimal combinations, which would be most efficient at keeping let's say a marine out of an enemy's notice?

Or, a biology question for fun: with mammals whom possess a tapetum lucidum layer in their eyes that create a reflective eyeshine, what would be best then?

...or is this too obscure a question for The Science Forum?

It's only been less than a day. These forums can be a bit slow at times so it might be a day or two to get a good response. I didn't respond earlier because I don't think I can really answer your question other than pointing out that green light is the most visible to human eyes, but that would also be highly visible to others. Also, some forms of night vision convert IR to visible light as those without goggles couldn't see the IR lightbulbs (or LEDs) used to illuminate an area.

Thanks MagiMaster for chiming in at least, I'll be more patient! Also thanks for your answer, Infrared I have researched into, but I am still eager to hear of any other possibilities that Google would not provide without specific queries.

If no one else responds, it's probably for mostly the same reasons. If you're more interested in the biology rather than the optics, you could try getting the thread moved to that section. (I couldn't say whether that'd get more responses or not though.)
