tie some string to a lump of rock and control the height by tugging/relaxing on the string

I was thinking, you could have some string attached to some flap that cover some ballast tanks. When you pull on the string the water comes in and the sub sinks. To bring it up, you have a string attached to the front of the sub and while you pull it up the water comes out of the back of the ballast tanks (more flaps with strings). Then you close the ballast tanks again and it floats. Repeat 3 times to get a good mark!

9th grade?! Absolute control?! Your teacher must be a sadist!

Alright... I am in the 11th grade, and my friends and I came out with this idea a few months back..

    You'll need a
    1) bicycle pump
    2) automatic valve (don't worry, it's made out of straws and plastic)

    1. Attach the hole above to a bicycle pump.
    2. When you put it in the aquarium.
    3. Water will enter from the hole at the buttom, displacing the air. (Air esacpes through the straw.)
    4. Water will stop entering when it enters the air compartment and closes the holes.
    5. Your submarine should be sinking by now. Allow your submarine to sink completely into the water before doing anything
    6. To make your submarine float, just pump in air from the bicycle pump.
    7. Just as your submarine emerges from the water, stop pumping immediately.
    8. Now, the water can't enter the submarine because the air compartment is still filled with water. (air can't escape)
    9. To allow the submarine to sink, pump in enough air until water comes out from the two tall straws.
    10. Once that happens, water will start entering the submarine again..

    ALL the best...
P.S. my friend didn't like bicycle pumps so we used electrolysis instead. Failed... the teacher didn't allow us to use 240v a.c. current.
