Balls that are kicked turning in the air are more succesful than none turning balls. What do you think?

When you say "turning" you surely mean by "spinning", ey?

I don't know if you can generally state that they are more successful, but they certainly have the potential. If that potential is put to use depends if the kicker knows what he is doing and has surgical skills to control the ball's speed and direction. Isn't Beckham known for his "turning" shots?

Spinning (and thus turning) the ball is important (from more to less) in table tennis, tennis, soccer, base ball, and what other ball sports... ?

a spinning ball is more succesfull since our brain has evolved in a none-rotating enviorment where flying objects havent rotated to change direction and with this background our brain is unable even with experience to predicts the balls path as it else could if it were not spinning.

a spinning ball will generally be more succesful provided that the shot is on target.

Coming from a soccer-player's brain, I will state that: it depends on your shot and what you want. If you want a very accurate and confusing shot, go for a spinning one: it will curve and trick the goalie (hopefully). However, the shot is not as powerful. If you want to blast the ball into the back of the net before the goalie can see it, then strike the ball without making it spin: it will slam strait into the net. However, accuracy is harder to get.

So, back to the "more successful", both can be very successful. Beckjam has an amazing curve shot, while Roberto Carlos can pound a 40 meter free kick straight through everyone.

Can we spin this thread a little more towards physics and ask about the mechanism that makes a spinning ball fly a curved path... or has that already been discussed in a previous thread?

Who can explain the Magnus effect?
