    Hello All,

I have a strange question about something I discovered the other day. It will sound very silly but I really am stumped on how this is possible.

I have a bathroom in my house that is approx. 5' by 5'. The door is a pocket door, so it just slides into the wall and kind of hangs freely in such a way that when it is shut you can push it and it will sway back and forth a little bit. The bottom of the door is probably 1/4 inch from the floor.

The other day I was using the restroom and noticed that everytime I pushed (yes its silly, number 2)....the door would sway slightly. I thought it was me rocking or shaking the floor or something but it wasn't either of those because I couldn't recreate the swaying unless I pushed.

So since then I can recreate this everytime just by entering the bathroom, shutting the door, and pushing blood to my head (like when trying to make a red face...) and the door sways. I can stand a good 4 feet from the door and still get it to move and it moves quite a bit, its very noticable.

So I had my wife watch as I did this (I thought maybe my eyes were playing tricks on me...) and she verified from both outside and inside the bathroom that the door is moving. She also tried and failed.

Does anyone know of anything that might cause this? Does it have to do with air pressure, or heat exerting from my body...cause the door to move? I can't seem to find anything just googling....(how do you google something like this?! lol). I figured a forum like this might have an answer for me. Sorry if it sound ridiculous, but I am genuinely curious about this.

    Thanks,
    Eric

Without seeing it, I have no idea- and I'm not sure I'd want to see that.

A displacement of air can cause that easily enough. Pocket doors simply hang, like a curtain. When you displace the air in the room, it takes very little pressure to make one sway, especially if there is no bottom rail to the door.

You can install a bottom track (which would be good for the door anyway) or tighten the existing one if there is one already installed.

If you're thinking you're having an ESP moment, try the experiment outside of the bath door where there is a greater volume of air to displace.

Thanks for the quick reply. I know its goofy. From the outside it does not work and I wasn't thinking it was an ESP moment or anything, I figured there was a scientific explanation.

I figured it had something to do with the air pressure in the room.

It's not accusatory. It's rather standard that in the absence of a "Scientific Explanation," many people will jump to conclusions.
Not you, perhaps, but the great many unregistered readers, lurkers and google hits that find this page. Many of those people will do just that and it's important to show that a lack of a simple explanation is not grounds for an extraordinary explanation.
It's not just you I'm considering, here.

If you want to get all scientifical, you can construct a basic barometer... or a piece of tissue paper... and go to that bathroom, have your wife suspend the paper from her fingertips near your body. Step outward and repeat. See if you can get the tissue paper to move the same way. It may not move at all near your body, where not enough air has been moved to have enough influence. It may, however, move heavily near your ears, where the steam is shooting out from your reddened face.
But more likely, it won't move until she's a couple feet or more from your body.

Thanks, I will try that just out of curiosity. I know what you mean, friends of mine that I told this to automatically assumed that I was leaning towards "Special Powers" which is opposite of what I was/am thinking (not to mention they poked fun at me quite a bit ). I believed as soon as I saw it that there must be some explanation! I just didn't know what it was.

    I can see it now...

"Ladies and Gentleman... The shitter psychic!"

You come out on the stage which is empty except for a single commode in the middle of the floor...

"Ok, I'm getting something... it begins with an 'J', I'm getting an 'J'... male figure, maybe an uncle or a father..."

    "My Uncle John!"
    "Yes, that's it- John!"
