It appears that Fausto Intilla is playing some sort of game. He seems to be either using some sort of “random paper generator” to create posts that contain a lot of technical jargon but don’t actually mean anything, or else is deliberately constructing his own nonsensical posts and splicing together random stuff from actual paper abstracts. Whatever is motives are, his posts appear to amount to little more than spam.

I agree, if you are reading this Fausto, we invite you to engage in debate on specific topics or issues in the field of conventional science. I personally would prefer you not to dump great gobbits of meaningless crap into our forum. Since there is no vote available I would seek the views of others.

Are you suggesting we give Fausto the "ousto"?

Whew....what a relief...man, I thought it was just me. I've read many of his posts, and I swear I kept hearing Charlie Brown's teacher in the background..WahwaWahwawa. I just assumed the subject matter was "over my head" and he was using "shop talk" that only grad students and insiders would understand, or it was a "lost in translation" problem. I wondered why many of his threads had no responses.

There is just no sense to his stupid bullshit he writes, he's just trying to blurr everyone with his fancy words, I mean, real scientifics, in whatever domain they work, are supposed to have a god damn opinion.

Sory for my very bad language, it will last t'ill I finish reading "Catcher in the rye", after that, it should get back to normal.

His posts are dull, they try to be controvercial but they end up just sending me to sleep. Sometimes I follow it and realise it's complete and utter wank, other times I don't follow but still come to the same conclusion.

Check out some of the random paper generators that are available online if you want to see what I mean:
    http://pdos.csail.mit.edu/scigen/

Random paper generators tend to string together technical terms that aren't really related to each other in a way that's gramatically correct but doesn't actually mean anything...just like his posts.

Well, his post here: http://www.thescienceforum.com/viewt...?p=39157#39157 is pure jargon and some of the terminology is a bit mangled, but it does make sense once you get past that.

I wonder how much is deliberate obfuscation? How much is simple language differences? (His profile claims switzerland as a home.) How much is an attempt to sound uber-scientific?

A lesson to all, methinks, it is better to speak as simply as possible and to avoid jargon unless absolutely necessary.

    Comprehensibility is key.

This post is completely uncalled for. The gentleman was actually discussing an extremely important topic to anyone who wishes to properly model the sub structure of any given mechanical system within the ultimately limited confines of todays computers. Bravo to him for having an ounce of true scientific intelligence and thank you Fausto for some of the leads you have given me to actuall scientific litterature of meaning and usefullness. As for the rest of you uneducated (or shall I say americanized) lazy brats with attitude shame on you, if you didn't like it don't read his stuff. Let others decide for themselves if they wish to ponder the topic discussed. Just because it didn't have the facts written down (which would have taken a long time and was assumed knowledge) doesn't mean it's not a discussion (and since when does it have to be a question or opinion to be a discussion). Oh well say la forum guer.

    Dear Beky,
I can only assume that you are one of the privileged few with an education, or... more likely, you are in the process of being educated...?

If you are, and the education is in the field of science, you will more likely that not find yourself collaborating with an American or two sometime in the future. It would be best to drop this attitude as it simply reveals the lack of quality in your education....

    Sincerely,
    william

I'm just not sure if he's posting material which he is familiar with or if he's copy-pasting material from journals and whatnot.

I do know for a fact that he copy-pasted an entire post from Wikipedia into a post on viruses. He gave absolutely no indication that the work was not his own.

Not really too cool in my book.

Also, while he was certainly not talking nonsense in the thread which I linked above, he doesn't really seem willing to discuss it at all. He just posts more cut and paste (most likely) or if it's his own words, then it has nothing to do with what has been said in the thread.

Personally, my gut says the man's a charlatan.

    I could be wrong though.

He might just be a jackass.

Just because it didn't have the facts written down (which would have taken a long time and was assumed knowledge) doesn't mean it's not a discussion
One thing that it does take to be a discussion is a willingness to discuss.

    Beky,

    'his stuff' as you put it, has been stolen from many other places, he has failed (repeatedly) to acknowledge that he is using 'cut up strips' of other peoples work. He has also failed to engage in debate, and when he does personally make a post you will see from it's grammatical construction that it was not written by the same person as his 'technical' posts. You are by all means free to decide yourself who is right and wrong. We have all tried to reason and/or debate with Fausto but he chooses to ignore our calls. As for this thread, none of us talk 'behind our backs' if we have something to say we will say it in the open. If it is unfair or against the rules it will be moderated but;

We have a clear duty to warn young inquisitive minds who seek an understanding of conventional modern science that Fausto's threads are pure fiction, crap or nonsense.

If we did not do this they leave with the wrong impression.

I think he just can't express himself well enough(maybe he doesn't know english to well), so he cuts and pastes stuff he likes or wants to discuss. Who really cares whose work it is as long as it's the begining of an intellectual conversation. I just think people in forums in general are to quick to make judgements which usually entail negative comments towards those who really mean no harm. Maybe instead of gettin all mad you guys could tell him simply to add a footer with the info to where he cut it from(if you haven't already) and then if he ignores you slam him. I get slammed all the time and it really makes me wanna not come to these forums. That kinda sucks cause it's such a good place to have conversations about things I enjoy talking about and it's rare for me to meet people I can talk to.

P.S. I'm Canadian sorry(to be read with Chinese accent) and to quote South Park "Blame Canada" I can't help but add my political two cents don't blow us up plz! And quite tryin to take us over we don't want to be the 53rd State God damn it

as long as it's the begining of an intellectual conversation.
So far it hasn't been the beginning of any such thing.

I also figured that part of the problem might well be difficulties with the English language. But, that's no excuse for plagiarism.

By the way, you might be interested to learn that it's all a game to him anyway. He posted as much in his thread in the business section.

He also got in trouble at Wikipedia for plagiarism and whatnot.

Anyway. I have no problems with the guy posting exerpts from journals or from whatever source. The more power to him (as long as he as he attributes his sources, that is.) But he doesn't seem capable of discussing the issues.

It's likely that he doesn't even understand them. I can definitely say that what little he added in his own words to the thread on polyribosomes in the dendritic spines implied that he really didn't understand what he was cut and pasting.

    Intellectual fraud, is the term.

Maybe instead of gettin all mad you guys could tell him simply to add a footer with the info to where he cut it from(if you haven't already) and then if he ignores you slam him.
That's what this thread is about. Basically.

Also, I brought up his plagiarism in a couple of threads. Macguyver did as well. He's really not interested in changing his ways. He's just here playing games and having fun.

I get slammed all the time and it really makes me wanna not come to these forums.
Heh. These forums are actually pretty damned sedate compared to my usual hangout. You need to develop a thicker skin.
The only instance I've seen of you etting 'slammed' is when Ophiolite got on you about a huge run on sentence.
I wouldn't call that slamming, more like helpful and constructive advice.

Communication is key in environments such as this. That's all this place is is communication.
    It's a discussion forum.
It would serve you well to learn how to express yourself in a manner that is easily understood by the natives.
    This means punctuation and structure.

By no means do you need proper grammar. Although you will certainly find anal idiots who love to pounce on poor grammar and whatnot.
It's about communication. Not making your english teacher proud.
Dangle all the participles you like.
Just try to structure your words in a manner that is understandable. This usually entails using punctuation and paragraphs as the two key aspects. Although capitalization is also important and is strangely overlooked by many.. some even use too much capitalization... never understood those people... Hmm.

    So.
    If you enjoy the forums.
    Then stick around.
    Observe.
Develop a writing style by which you can be understood.
And don't let the assholes get you down.

But, for god's sake, be intellectually honest.

it's rare for me to meet people I can talk to.
Aye. A common ailment in this day and age. And one which lends itself to the difficulties in communicating. Out of practice, eh?

You could join Mensa, of course... but then you'd probably end up an elitist snob... (*jabs at Billco* (wonder if I'm on his glorious ignore list yet? (Another sad display. The "You're so on my ignore list!" thing...)))

Ophiolite just slammed me for sentence structure and grammar assumming I didn't already know (see fiction writting blah blah blah). I have a max one hour a day on a computer and often run out of time so I have to type quick. So I jotted something down and he gives me crap for sentence structure. I like to speak in heavy slang too, anybody wanna give me crap fo that. He also called me new to this forum actually I've been here many times before and have run away every time because people couldn't keep their crappy opinions to themselves. Not to mention the fact that no one ever seems to be capable of having a discussion on anything I poste eg. Impracticallity of solenoid excitation of electrons in a gas to produce a laser, expansion of equations relating to electron orbits and interactions of all charged particles(that was last year), that other girls question about chirality, weak interactions and left handed spin (I think the question needed to be revised but somebody could have explained why. I needed to think about it personally but at least I admit that and don't come up with some B.S. to cover that I don't). Anyway damn you Ophiolite pick on yourself would ya!
