Why are 90% of the questions here either total BS or philsophy?
Please select an answer most pleasing to your psyche:
1. It is a science forum.
2. Which group does your question fall into?
3. 42% of the answers are informative.
4. What's wrong with philosophy?
Isn't it a fact that 83.72% of all statistics are made up?
No, actually it is a statistic that 24.9% of facts are made up.
I have asked myself the same question many, many times.
I don't have an answer. All I can say that, if other members share these opinions, they should jump in and squash BS whenever they see it, and politely (preferably) point out that philosophy, while entertaining to some, has no place on a Physics sub-forum
Since physics was until recently, known as Natural Philosphy, at least in the better universities I find your statement disappointing.
Because it seems that for every person with a genuine interest in science and the scientific method, there are nine people who can't be bothered with the method or discipline involved, seem to think the universe has to play by their own personal rules and just want to spout their own pet theories from the tops of their heads. Off with them, I say!
What, their heads? Just a little harsh, wouldn't you say?
Bur seriously, oftentimes, when I login after a brutal day at work, I am tempted to send most posts here and in Math to one of the SinBins.
But that would not be responsible moderation - a moderator's job is to facilitate or even promote relevant discussion. And who decides what is "relevant discussion"? Moderators or members? I dunno
How we jointly do this in the face of so much lunacy I am not sure. Any suggestions
A question I sometimes ask myself is why 90% of the forum posts are made in the pseudoscience section. I may be exaggerating, I don't know. But, if that's what people want to discuss, then so be it.
I'm not sure I would accept the 90% figure, but many posts could be labelled as "total BS" and there are others that should probably be posted in the Philosophy sub forum.
What sometimes surprises me is that there are a fair number of individuals, with a decent knowledge of the sciences, who are prepared to hang around and contribute to this Forum. If I was competent in maths and physics I might decide to look for a more specialised, less general, forum.
I suspect the more technical the forum the less will be the numbers of trolls, and also those who mistakenly believe they have overturned some very important scientific theories.
