Hey people (First time on this website because i showed my Science professor this article after i came across it).
So i thought i would ask you guys to get more of a collective view!!!

STEPHEN HAWKING: How to build a time machine | Mail Online

So anyway, Reading through i seen conflicting Statements

#1- Steven: "For every 16-minute orbit, they'd only experience eight minutes of time."
My thoughts: (incase you didnt read it) he was talking about about a "black whole and orbiting its facial perimeter in a space ship" because we all know time is slower in space then on earth!
So breaking that down its obvious that its 1/2 the time, (So 1year will equal 6 months) at 99.99% of light speed

#2- Steven: "At this speed, a single day on board is a whole year of Earth time. Our ship would be truly flying into the future."
My thoughts: (If you didnt read) he was talking about building a spaceship that was capable of 99.99% of light speed rather then using a black whole.
But in #1 he said we were traveling double the speed the time? And #2 we would have to travel 365times fast to achieve that speed?

    Highlight 1 fact
186,000 miles per second is the cosmic speed limit!

Steven: "The fastest manned vehicle in history was Apollo 10. It reached 25,000mph. But to travel in time we'll have to go more than 2,000 times faster." = 50,000,000 MPS

I idol Steven but we Really couldn't seem to come to a conclusion of what he ment by these statements

    HELP!!!

Speed of light is about 186,282.3 miles per second. That is 11176938 miles per minute. That is 670,616,280 miles per hour.

Don't go without a round trip ticket!

He said nothing in this example about traveling at 99.99% of the speed of light. In fact, he gave no figures as to the radius or speed of the orbit, How fast you would have to orbit and how much the time rate would differ would depend on how close you got to the black hole. There are actually two effects taking place here both the high gravity of the black hole and the high orbital speed will slow the time for the ship as seen from Earth. Time is not slower in space than on Earth( if you are far from any source of gravity, it is actually faster.), it is slower where there is a stronger gravity field.

Again the first example made no reference to the speed.

The apollo figure was in miles per hour, not miles per second.

Ignoring the gravitational effects of the balck hole (and the fact you are accelerating to orbit around it), you would need to travel at ~87% of light speed to get a factor of 2.

And #2 we would have to travel 365times fast to achieve that speed?
To get a factor of 365, you would need to travel at 99.9996247% of c
