The shadow of red sunglasses exposed to white light, for instance? Or a low level flooding of red light upon a "normal" shadow from elsewhere?

In most cases there is not a complete absence of light. If you are standing in the sunshine casting a shadow on the grass you are blocking the direct sunlight but there is still ambient light from the sky and reflected light from surrounding objects. The grass still appears green but in a darker shade. If you were spacewalking outside a spaceship your shadow on the spaceship's hull might be close to black, but even then there would be light from the stars and planets so you would still see to some extent the color of the hull.

Did Renoir use any black paint? Maybe on the black hats.
