    Since arboreal means related to trees, I presume that arboreal lightning is lightning that strikes trees.
    Since trees are pointed and stick up in the air, they are naturals for attracting lightning strikes.

    So when you hear it thunder
    Don't run under a tree.

    hi, this is hyderstungg.

    dear mr. ophiolite, i found a picture of this arboreal lightning - it is not related to trees but it is named so because it always seems to strike upward from the horizon, never horizontally in the sky.

    I think it's related to the shape this kind of lightning take: you know... like a tree, as it had branches or roots.

    ("arbor" is the latin word for tree)
