I just wanted to be clear what does it mean to say that exchange of energy cannot be continuous....

A flash light is not actually a perfectly continuous supply of EMR, it is composed of many packets of energy, each one being a multiplicative of Plank's Constant.

4. It means you cannot have any arbitrary value of energy, but only descrete values. Think of it like numbers representing values for energy. Only whole numbers of integer value are allowed as multiples of the basic unit of energy. Something like 2 or 5 would be allowed but 3.14 or 6.23 would not be allowed.

what does this mean........actually classically we do talk about average oscillators per unit volume in the frequency range f and df and is also used in the derivation of the planck radiation law...

i mean planck did not tell anything about the quantisation of the photons...
but instead told about the energy exchage between the oscillators and the raidation...isnt' it......

6. MigL is correct; you cannot have 'half an oscillation' with light, so only full steps are acceptable, which limits your precision in varying individual photon energy. However I am willing to bet that in the near future the QM nuts are going to invent half steps for the sake of their MATH.

To reiterate, it means that when you increase the amplitude of a light beam, you are increasing the number of photons emitted per second. When you increase the frequency (discrete), you increase individual photon energy in the form of making it 'bluer'. Think of it as going from punching a wall 5 times per second, and then raising that to 10 times per second. When you double the rate, you double the energy being imparted. When this is done with light, you go from green to ultra violet, which can cause a nasty sunburn due to its raised 'hits per second'.
