I am entering an essay contest about science. What are some points that would enhance the ideas discuss in a scientific paper? I understand that mechanics and grammar are always counted but what other emphasis must not neglect in a scientific paper? Thanks

Strong literature study in the introduction: prove you have studied the important recent work in the field.

The contents depends a bit on the field. In engineering, you need a problem description, what other solutions have been offered in literature, how your solution is better, a strong methodology (don't leave anything important out).
Experimental validation is very important too: experiment description, results, discussion

And end with a proper conclusion.

Figures are also not to be underestimated: make sure they are easy to read, contain all necessary information such as scale, units, legend... and they are properly referred to in the text.
Make sure they are also useful in black and white, as most journals or proceedings are in black and white and even if they aren't, if it's worth printing out, it will also be in black and white.

Make sure your equations are solid and preferably use the most common symbols. If you use units of measure, preferably use units everyone can easily understand: i.e. SI units.

Of course the content has to be worth something too.

A strong scientific paper is basically judged on the basis of intangibles:

Impact on scietific knowledge, importance of the work

Degree of difficulty and novelty of thought

Clarity of thought, tightness of logical reasoning and rigor

    Thoroughness
