Can someone explain in simpleton terms what it is and means?

wikipedia is far too complex for me, please remember I'm an A-level physics dropout so keep it simple

It's not how many questions you ask, but the answers you get - Booms

This is the Acadamy of Science! we don't need to 'prove' anything!

Depending on whether or not simple includes or excludes the mathematical definition of a dimension, either:

    - Little string-like things vibrating in certain ways seem to act like particles we're familiar with.

    or

    - These tiny things wrapped up in 11 dimensions vibrate, and these vibrations seem to act a lot like particles we're familiar with.

Then again, as DrRocket has mentioned several times, string theory has not made any predictions, which is basically the whole point of any scientific theory, so it's still too early to put much stock in it.

Er...I 'll make it simple :
In 1968 , it was discovered that protons and neutrons are made up of 2 things _ 2 variety's " colors" of quarks _ 1) Up quark 2 ) Down quark ,
a proton is made up of an up quark and 2 down quarks ...and neutron of 1 down quark and 2 up quarks... But what the String Theory states is that these quarks
(& electrons too) are nothing but closed "Loops" ( which are strings forming a circle, ellipse..etc ) [ the string may even be open , but certainly not in case of quarks ]
and too make a long story short - these strings are ever-vibrating and strings ( or loops ) of a certain element vibrate with similar "rhythm" ..and this rhythm gives the piece of matter certain properties with you are familiar with - also note that these strings are 1 dimensional , do not get confused the " 11 dimensions " aren't the dimensions of these strings...

and again you might ask that why only a loop( or string , same) and how come did we get the idea of a string ? And why not anything else...let me tell you , that this requires some in-depth knowledge of the universe and quantum mechanics.

Imagine a string on a guitar. When it vibrates it creates a tone. Different vibrations give different tones.
Now image a tiny, tiny String in physics. Again, that string vibrates. Different vibrations manifest themselves as different elementary particles. What is the point ? All the various elementary particles, with all their differences, can be explained by one common concept, the vibrating String - it is a way to unify all the forms of matter and their interactions into just one overarching model.
