If energy is a form of matter is it possible to encode information in energy?
Can energy have dimensions or shape?

You have encoded information in energy every time you hit the Submit key in this forum.

The less snarky answer is that energy (in the form of photons) can have frequency, and you can encode information in this frequency. So yes.

I don't see what was snarky about my answer. For it to have been snarky I would have had to intended sarcasm. I believe I gave an answer that, upon contemplation, would have led geordief to a fuller understanding than a technical statement.
I would prefer to encourage thinking over parroting.

Came across as snarky to me. If that wasn't your intent, I'm sorry to have offended.

i see that the author of the question himself considers the question stupid!

and i think it would be better to use emoticons with you posts. that will surely express your intent and lessen the possibility of misunderstanding it.
    i'm a genius, innit? 8)

and as for the second question, I don't understand it completely.
here's my take- we denote energy in joules, which has got dimensions (M)(L^2)(T^-2)

    so energy has got dimensions.

I wasn't offended. I just believe it is important to correct inaccuracies, whether of fact or opinion.

Which emoticon means "My statement means exactly what it says and contains no explicit, or implicit criticism or derision." ? Ah, that's correct......this emoticon here..... the one between the arrows.... ===> <===

You can use something like or  or 8)
This will definitely tell the reader that you are friendly, and are just explaining as it is.

Those emoticons say to me that the person has made a humourous, or at least lighthearted remark. (The last one suggests they think the remark is also elegant or clever.) If someone has commented on the elevation of a frog to the role of prince during a period of wet weather, then I may well post the pun

    It is raining. 8)

If I am simply commenting on the state of the weather I shall say

    It is raining.

I understand that your advice is well intentioned. I appreciate that emoticons are designed to convey that large portion of communication that is non-verbal. However, I am not going to use them indiscriminately in circumstances where I judge that little or no ambiguity should exist. Your comments will lead me to being more cautious in how I phrase remarks, but not to peppering my posts with yellow circles.

As the author of the thread I am grateful for any reply even if it might seem offhand (or whatever)
I don't imagine it was intentional but the phrase " every time you hit the Submit key in this forum" could be read as a veiied attack on the actual poster (for posting)
I had no way of knowing if that was intended or unintentional but ,as I said, the mere fact that my question was answered at all was more important than any imagined slight to me .
Apart from that maybe that answer seemed to be too all encompassing and I found the answer about energy in the form of photons more illuminating.

Yes, yes, I agree. One cannot (actually one should not) "fill" in their posts with emoticons. But they are, of course, very very useful in clearing misconceptions. Hence, they should be used where they are necessary (and also to reply in a light-hearted way! :-D ). I see people using emoticons indicriminately while chatting through messengers. There are times when I felt - "Is it the person or is it the smilies talking to me?"

And the photons answer was good!

Speech is information in the form of acoustic waves, which is energy.

When you look at things, your eyes receive information in the form of light, which is energy.

Any radio, TV or other such wireless signal is electromagnetic waves (as is light), which is energy.

the Aldis lamp also uses light to send information. So did (and possibly still do) tribes communicating by lighting fires on hilltops.

Any communication devices using wires, from the Morse telegraph to Ethernet, use electric signals, which is also energy.

The list goes on and on and on.

    Hope this answers your question.
