Appaently another machine nicknamed the International Linear Collider (ILC) has been on the drawing table for 3 years and it will be much more powerful than the LHC. It will smashed billions of particles per second into each other in attempts to show other kinds of matter, the origins of gravity, and what caused the Big Bang. The cost is estimated at a mere 4 billion dollars.

If some scientists are so scared that smashing some particles together with the LHC is going to give birth to mini black holes why on Earth are they going to be smashing billions of protons together per second to see what happens? Won't the black holes coalesce as there are more and more of them created?

    Crazy crazy stuff.

The scientists involved with the LHC (and high energy physicists in general) are not worried about the mini black hole problem. Very high energy (much higher than LHC) protons (cosmic rays) are hitting the earth, moon, sun, and all stars all the time. So far everything is still here.

No scientists are afraid of the LHC. Virtually everyone who is qualified to have an opinion agrees that it is safe. There are nuts who are afraid of it, yes, but there are nuts who believe all sorts of crazy things.

The international linear collider you are speaking of will be colliding matter with anti-matter at near C. This type of collision will result in annialation, and therefore the creation of a micro black hole would just not be possible.
The hand of time rested on the half-hour mark, and all along that old front line of the English there came a whistling and a crying. The men of the first wave climbed up the parapets, in tumult, darkness, and the presence of death, and having done with all pleasant things, advanced across No Man's Land to begin the Battle of the Somme. - Poet John Masefield.

If you look closely at the guys attacking the LHC, you'll notice that some of them have attacked similar experiments that failed to end the world and that most of them are not really physicists.

Boooooring old shit by biologists claiming that also the RHIC (which is switched off now) will blow up the world in 2000....ummm this was 8 Years ago and damn, the world is still soooooooo there.
This dude was also launching a lawsuit (because he went to law school after failing miserably in biology or other science related fields) to stop the LHC in a US court, nice try butt-nut. There is no democracy or oppinion in science, this is what this guy can not comprehend. Or this Roessler fruitloop. When he is prooven incorrect he cries "foul!!" and of course "conspiracy!!" and compares himself to Bhudda and Luther
And guess what: he filed a lwasuit at the European High Court and got thrashed.
And when I check the news of the last couple of days, I do not see any mention of the LHC any more, I wonder why this is??
I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by
