Various conspiracies related to Freemasonry claim:

Freemasonry is the Illuminati or New World Order, and secretly controls all aspects of society and government. [1] (http://www.freedomdomain.com/welcome.htm) This concept was satirized in a Simpsons episode, Homer the Great, featuring an order called the Stonecutters.
The United States was founded by Freemasons who have interwoven Masonic symbols into American society, particularly in national seals, streets in Washington DC, architecture, and the Dollar Bill. Jack the Ripper was a Freemason whose murders resembled Masonic initiation rituals. This is the subject of Alan Moore's graphic novel From Hell, who references various works by other authors with similar claims.
The September 11 attacks were astrological in nature, as part of a hidden Masonic war against Islam. [8] (http://www.enterprisemission.com/tower2.htm)
The JFK assassination was involved with Freemasonry.
The Denver airport contains a Freemason symbol and keypad, of unknown purpose. [9] (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&l...cy&btnG=Search)
Freemasons intertwine various symbols and numerology into modern culture, such as corporate logos. [10] (http://www.theforbiddenknowledge.com...emason_sig.htm)
Freemasonry is related to several religions such as Christianity, Gnosticism and Kabbalah, and ancient civilizations including Babylon and Egypt. [11] (http://www.rapidnet.com/~jbeard/bdm/Cults/masons.htm) [12] (http://www.geocities.com/endtimedeception/rael.htm)
Freemasonry is occult in nature and worships their own particular god, such as GAOTU "The Grand Architect of the Universe", or Jabulon, an amalgam of the gods Jehovah, Baal, and Osiris. Freemasonry is a form of Satanism and intends to start Armageddon.
Most Freemasons are unaware of hidden or secretive ruling bodies that govern their organization, conduct occult ritual, or control various positions of power. This is an example of a secret society within a secret society.
The KKK, Skull and Bones, and other organizations are branches of Freemasonry.

Wow, that last guy had quite a bit of info. I'm not so sure of the validity of half that stuff, but it certainly makes for cool playthings of the mind.

On a more serious note, anyone ever heard of the Lost Cause?

Do remember that nothing ended at Appomattox; that's just when the guerilla war began. Lee may have officially surrendered, but he in fact secretly commanded the KKK for several years until he became too old, at which time Forrest took the leadership.

Anyone know why reconstruction ended in 1877? The North wanted very much to extend it another 20 or even 30 years, but they were forced into negotiating with Forrest to end it in exchange for the disbandment of the underground Confederate resistance. The original KKK consisted of the former Confederate Secret Service being at the top leadership, with lower level positions correlating with former Confederate military rank.

All former military insignia and titles were camouflaged with labels like "Grand Wizard" and "Grand Dragon." Lists of surnames -- of both friends and foes -- were compiled, that future generations might vindicate the Lost Cause in the event of a future political or military takeover of the Union.

Getting back to more recent times, the freemasons are all about symbols. And it has nothing to do with the occult. Most are Biblical in origin, such as the number "77."

Genesis 4: 23-24 states, "And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, 'Hear my voice: ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt. If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.'"

Hence the symbol "77" means "revenge."

And the reason for these symbols is that they serve as a covert means of saying to other freemasons, "hey, we're the ones behind it!" A freemason is simply someone who understands how to read the symbols.

It's certainly ironic how people totally unfamiliar with Southern culture dismiss red staters as honest-to-goodness Bible thumpers. Do ya think that maybe they're training the next generation in the art that is freemasonry?

No it doesn't; there's another verse in the NT, where Jesus is asked how many times one should forgive their brother (the question is, 7 times?) and he answers, 70 times 7. This doesn't mean that 77 or even 490 equals 'forgiveness', it's just that saying 7 ( a 'holy' number) or 70 times 7 (might as well be a million) were expressions of the day.

Since when does 7 times 70 equal 77?

Genesis 4: 23-24 is the first place in the Bible that mentions the number 77.

BTW, I'm talking about masonic symbolism...
