    What makes someone a hippie?
I looked up the definition and I think it needs revising for it was a historical definition. It basically sayed someone from the 1960s who rejected social values and smoked psychedelic drugs.

I have had people call me a hippie yet I don't smoke anything, I'm not from the 60s, and I only reject common social values when I feel it is useless to accept them.

So, again I ask, what is a hippie?

i refuse to labeled a 'hippie,' but i love nature, so i must say that hippies can love nature, but not all nature lovers are hippies.

(and no, i'm not really angry/upset, if you were wondering if i'm serious. i'm just partly serious)

im not a hippie i hate hippies, those drug smocking peace nature loving pricks.
you should have added LeavingQuietly rather than me since i go for science he seem to say some stuff that only comes from smocking people.

how about i add a poll what makes people so increadibly stupid and add several of your names?

if youre gonna make a poll like this include atleast several names rather than one singular wich then is more of an attack against one person

you gotta be a hippie to think im a hippie

    Zelos when he grows up.
nope never has never will i hate people and want to dance on their grave
when youve passed on notice me and i´ll dance on yours aswell

    Hippies love drugs, i dont
    Hippies love nature, i dont
They "care" for others, i dont, so are they but thats a different story
I am everything a hippie isnt. Im a scientific person who loves nothing but metal and concrete. i want no nature nothing of that kind
so calling me a hippie is just a stupid joke HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Sugar is sweet, your feelings are that of sweetness. You are merely eating sweets. That joy you have will be taken, just as someone take your sweets. Joy is something that you can loose, just like everything else. It is called pain.

Unless you believe in feelings as something that is sepperated from that which exists (there is no such thing). When you die, you are sepperated from all that you have, like happiness. If you did not have happiness you were not happy. If you had happiness and don't have it any more, then you have lost it, like loosing the joy of a caramell you allready have eaten, pain it is called. If it was not possible to loose joy, then there would be no pain.

You cannot win. I have told you, feel warned.

Could I meet the hippie that ever told you that?

You wouldn't care if there was nothing that you have that you can loose.

Do I have to spell it for you? You will have equall pain and pleasure, no matter what you do. No matter how many lives you live. No matter how long you live.

"X is the integral of happiness that you have had. If it exists, then you have it. If it does not exist, then you never had it.

Either way you will loose it when you no longer have anything, and if you have something, you are still alive."

I know that I am not a full fledged hippie, but maybe I'm part hippie. Like 1/25 hippie or something.

Guys please, this is a very low standard thread. I will remove it to the trashcan unless someone can argue why it has any value on a science forum.

And btw I see several ad hominem attacks on Zelos (unless he accepts them as jokes). So if Zelos doesn't see them as well intentioned jokes then they will be deleted (including the poll option). Try to keep some level of discussion please!

haha, I'm always making fun of Zelos being a hippie because he calls me one. I will admit I am much much closser to being one than he is though. Zelos is tough, he can take it.

Anyways, this is supposed to be a serious question. People I know are starting to call me a hippie but I don't think I am. I mean what kind of hippie writes ona science forum. Just cuz I play a little hacky sac now and again doesn't mean anything. I'm trying to find a clear, new definition to revise the old one (which seems incorrect).

Here is the one I got from the dictionary.

    Hippie:
unconventional young person of the 1960s: a young person, especially in the 1960s, who rejected accepted social and political values and proclaimed a belief in universal peace and love.
Hippies often dressed unconventionally, lived communally, and used psychedelic drugs.

I don't fit in with any of these.

Seems to me like most people think of the 1960's stereotype.

My own view would be different for a man and a woman. The man would be about sixty and still have long hair, but when you asked him his name after about 10 minutes of thinking he would reply "I D O N T K N O W". A bit like a very boring ossie osbourne.
The woman on the other hand would be about forty, middle class, have her own knitted scarf, practise yoga and have kids called apple and ocean.
Thats what comes to my mind anyway.

I think the popular thing these days is a knitted hat or scarf, at least when it comes to the hippies I know. Yes they do often practice Hatha Yoga but I do not believe most of them truly understand the nature of yoga. I knida know this hippie guy who deffinately has long hair. What is strange is that is is actually very knowledgeable... about plants that is.

    What is a jock?

    What is a nerd?

They are societal categories which no one fits neatly or completely into.

I enjoyed the hippie era. You lot today have your pc's and games, they/we had er rather more liberal things to occupy time with, I remember that after the austerity of the war and it's after effects (bread rationing started in the UK after the war ended! - to help feed europe). The late 60's early 70's saw the emergence of youth as a force, no generation since has bothered to pick up the baton and take it further, you all live passively under the shadow of the older generation - stick entirely to it's rules and allow it to destroy your future habitat before they pass on what's left, you whimper yet do nothing to stop it. You need to unite! not the stupid US campus/Paris riots we took part in, learn from that we were naiave but we tried.

I'll dig out the photo of me at the IOW Pop festival 1969 I'm sure it's still around - hair down to my waist - but the 'company' hmmmmm....

I don't agree. My work brings me into frequent contact with young teenagers, and, although they all differ (obviously), there is an overwhelming worry among them about the future of the planet as a result of climate change caused by Man's affluent life-style.

There is also a recognition that the capitalist economy is somehow to blame.

I am optimistic, not in the near term, but I am in the long- I think our kids are just great. If they drop out and decide to get rich, they will be doing no more than their parents did. But dropping out of "love everybody" is a lot easier than dropping out of "O, eff, we're pooing our pants here". Anyway, that's my hope, so there.

Hmm. This isn't philosophy as I learned it. What going on?

    Isn't a hippie not a concept?
I am sorry but I must point out the irony in the fact that someone by the name guitarist posted in a thread on hippies.:P No offense, it's just funny.

Anyways. I would probably be one of what you call the young generation. I do a little here and there to help things (e.g. try to get the bakery to stop putting trans fat in everything), although I believe that nature will work on its own. If we damage the earth enough it will damage us with equal force... in other words we will "reap what we sow".

My veiw of hippies which I am sure is very biased, is not a good one. It is a group of conformists that thought they were after love and peace but in reality where just satisfying their own egos with psychedelic drugs and over dramatized music. I don't mean to be insulting here but, that is what the evidence has showed me.

It's not possible to actually define a hippie. I have never seen an "official" hippie in my life before.

You are a hippie when you call yourself (think you are) one. That’s the same thing with nerd, even though I would obligate this as an insult.(much rather hacker)
also hippie isn’t a person, it is the life style of a person.

I'm sure lots of hippies took advantage of this (drugs&love), but there is always a minority of exploiters.

Oh, and if you think that DaBOB is a hippie, I can explain this. It is not that DaBOB is a hippie, this is what you call young (like me). We are still young and still grow hair where it belongs =P. We aren't the whole day locked up inside some room. And we live in the future therefore get to learn double the amount as you guys do,

if you have studied a little of youth-culture(right word?) you will have noticed that a "hippie" is one.
I haven't come to fight my word, but to find the truth.

"im not a hippie i hate hippies, those drug smocking peace nature loving pricks."

thats not a definition, thats a generalization. so i guess you think all africans are drug smuggling gun running criminals with the intellect of lower animals?

hippy is a way of life, a way of treading the earth lightly, and doing drugs has nothing to do with being a hippy, you can thank the CIA for all the acid they pumped into them in the 60s for MK-Ultra. hippy culture is a counter culture to the mainstream consumerist system that is still in power today, who look at everyone as consumers numbers and statistics, and not humans. look up edward bernays and sigmond frued to get an idea of what i am talking about.
the consumerists live in a materialistic fantasy world driven by desire and greed and it creates nothing but money for them and war for the rest of us. hippies were the counter to this when the system started growing, they realized that the higher choice was to live based on freedom, peace, love, and mind expansion, among other things. i do not see why there is any need to attack a person who just wants these things, and is actually putting themselves out there trying to make a difference. that is blatently ignorant. the people that you should be calling pricks are the people killing our brothers in the middle east, because of a flawed foreign policy. the people who did ghastly experiments on humans, that people wouldnt even THINK of doing on animals. (cia) just read a bit and you will find out the world you live in. science isnt everything.
