Nobel Peace Prize: A world sigh of relief?

Awarding the Nobel Peace Prize might represent a world wide sigh of relief.

The United States, the most powerful nation on this planet, follows up eight years of President George Bush with an election in which the Republican Party chooses an aging John McCann with running mate Sarah Palin as contender for the presidency and finally elects President Barack Obama.

    Scary stuff!!

Reportedly, Russian and Belarussian fora are filled with flashbacks of Gorbachev's Nobel Peace Prize - and the fact that, a year later, that empire fell to pieces.

    Stay tuned...

That prize has been awarded to Yasser Arafat. It is a joke.

To be fair, Arafat and Rabin were very close to reaching a resolution to the Palestinian conflict at the time. Then Rabin got shot and it all fell to shit .

As to Gorbachev, I've often disliked the popular notion of him being a nice guy. After all, it was his plan to forcefully displace the Afghans, causing perhaps multiple thousands of deaths. Nobel prizes shouldn't go to men who order war crimes to be committed.
