I was interested to see this referred to in a recent thread, now closed: Free forum : BreakAwayForum

I commend a brief walk around the site for anyone who, like me, has been puzzled by Mayflow's beliefs, attitudes and methods of argument.

Everything about it; layout, content and images, strikes me as the antithesis of the scientific approach to the physical world.

No doubt there are lots of people to whom this sort of thing appeals. Speaking personally, getting stuck with someone who thinks like this at a dinner party is my idea of Hell. But then, I'm a scientist.

Indeed. I found myself reflecting that there exists now, in some quarters, a bit of a cult of irrationality, possibly bred (sociologically speaking) from some of the disappointments and downsides of technology since the heady days of the 1960s. You know, the days of "Thunderbirds", when the future was a rosy technological one in which energy was cheap and everything was going to be nuclear etc etc. Of course it has turned out to be more complicated, and a lot people realise science doesn't answer all their questions about the human condition, so there's been a bit of a backlash. At the same time, organised religion has become uncool. Hence all the "crystals-and-shit" one comes across nowadays.

But, while I too do not look to science for all the answers in life, I suppose I have more or less dedicated myself to fighting anti-science irrationality all my life. So people like Mayflow and I are chalk and cheese and will always fight each other.

And if you remember even more, it was also the heyday of gurus, the culmination of the Freud/ Jung/ Wilhelm Reich and his orgone machine nonsense, Velikovsky and Von Daniken.

Though I remember it as The Jetsons giving us the idea that free nuclear power and flying cars were just around the corner.

When I studied history of science, we had to do a rather depressing module on anti-science movements. One might hope that it all ended with the Age of Enlightenment, but that was immediately followed by Romanticism. It looks like something we have to learn to live with.

Yes I was going to write speculating on what a meeting between, say, Faraday and Wordsworth would have been like, but then prudently checked the web first and found they did exchange ideas on at least one occasion, if indirectly: Richard Barnett reviews

Evidently a romantic like Wordsworth and a scientist like Faraday were able to treat one another with respect. But then, both were intelligent, well-educated people.

It was just an offer to see that I do have my own forum and to support the evidence. You are not required to join
to post there, and you under no obligation to or not. That was not my point.
My point was simply because some here were being sarcastic and inferring that I do not really have my own forum.

I believe that life is not a stagnant thing of some sort, but a process unfolding.

If some or all of you want to badmouth my forum, I do not care. Have at it and enjoy.

Mayflow it was very useful that you posted a link to it. It is always helpful to understand the mindset of one's interlocutor. That's why I thought it was worth drawing attention to.

Indeed I would not have had the patience or intelligence to become a professor of chemistry - at least not in the British sense of the term.

But I do not set out to be kind to anti-rationality. Since my teens I have seen it as the enemy, to be fought at every opportunity.

I never lie except for protective purposes, like "Officer, I only had 1 beer" - they know I am lying, but they will let it go. If I said I had six, they would feel they would get into trouble if they let me off the hook. Silly, I know, but true. Much of life is silly but true in that way.

Nice idea but no, most of the nuts here get off on being thought great scientists, so they want to be in a science forum. Mayflow is quite different. She is basically anti-science, whether she realises this or not.

See? It however depends on what you consider to your advantage. As I said I only will do that for self protection, but for no other reason. If I am attacked I will run if I can, or lie if I feel it in the best interest - you might note that in my example it was for the best interest of both me and the policeman. I would have no possible reason to lie on an internet forum, though, and that was something that someone here seemed to have some concerns about.

If you want more, I will tell you more. I think most people are quite pretentious to say the least. It would have been a point I would have wanted to progress towards on the psychology forum, but it got locked. Remember always that when one door is locked, other doors will open. The doors of perception only close in death, if even then.

Beer, that means nothing to me. I do not know of that person. I sense you feel hurt or disappointed in them. They are not here, so why converse about them if they are not here to defend? All I can know of someone is not by what others tell me about them, but from their own words and actions.

I may want to learn, but reading of for instance the life of Jesus Christ. Sure, there may be cool and interesting ideas of what he was like and taught, but I was not there. I did not talk with him in person. It is just a bunch of ideas someone is presenting about someone else. See - I actually do use scientific method.

I also notice I am tending to use the word "see" a lot more lately on this forum. Interesting. Hmmm' is there something called observational science?

here is one of the threads over on that woo forum: Einstein's bogus relativity
where the author claims to be studying Relativity but the only conclusion he can come to is that it is total bunk. he concludes by stating that he no longer has any respect whatsoever for the term 'science'

I was just on another discussion elsewhere talking about what someone called energy vampires. What I said was this.

Nobody is an energy Vampire. You give your energy to whatever you wish to. That is your choice to do. Then if it seems to be well placed, you add more energy. If you see that your energy was misplaced, you find better places to invoke it.

It's a bit sad people have collectively come here to slag off a site which is no longer open.

Not that it being open, makes this any more a flame thread it was intended for. Perhaps... even created to openly discredit someone, most likely out of spite.

Definitely even sadder a moderator has shown absolute disregard to complying to their most specific duties of being a moderator.

the abuse demonstrated here, is a leaf short of an intelligent discussion forum. This thread was created to cause a flame war and opposed judgement to someone who most likely contributed here, whether banned now or not. I do not know... only that is it ugly to read this thread.

Beer, that could describe many people on this forum. I don't see you in that category, but check out that duck thing and that Ph thing. They just post stupid shit and like Chess says, the mods evidently approve, and if you don't take their shit, you get banned and they post on and do that same shit to other people.

I'm saying, a bunch of intellectuals should not openly make fun about someone... it's a lack of intelligence to the contrary.

The fact a moderator has reveled in a flaming thread, is even more disturbing.

I understand this Chess, and agree. But I keep getting banned here because I will not take these guys crap. It isn't like I can't defend my own positions and ideas if I am allowed the freedom to do so. I do not want them censured or banned either, but I would like the freedom to do the same.

Beer, my posture is that I don't like people like Duck and Ph and 421 being jerks at anyone they please to and then others getting banned while they can still do this crap to others.

My posture is a remarkable example of how you can respond to verbal attacks.

Verbal attacks have even happened today, with no moderation in physics, while I have remained a level head. Though as soon as I show 'emotions' to the obvious verbal attacks, I was suspended. It's interesting how a moderator can take an incident which happened close to four days after the incident and still ban them for seven days, no likely due an insipid hate towards me.

In which I was quoted saying something to Markus, and then calling it... what was the word... disrespect? I had no disrespectful intentions towards the guy... he is actually the only mod here I fully appreciate for his contributions.

No if you feel you where banned for no reason, some of us will speak for you.

My ban was also uncalled for, the event itself had well surpassed any banning rights. Markus let something go, which another mod couldn't.

It is blatant abuse, but the rules of the forum seem to say that these "special" people are free to abuse other people here, and I do not like that.

They are jerks, but hey don't lie to you!

    but you are not.

... why do you post here? A real question (and no, I am not getting at you)...I am fascinated by you.

I have known your posts for many many years... even the early settlements of sciforums, in which there was real scientific discussions... now look at it... sciforums is falling to the crap hole... all because of it's moderators... best bit... I predicted it and I was ridiculed saying the site was much more than me... well maybe so.

.... doesn't fix the fact it's run by assholes, and hopefully, this place has it's own shadow, rather than the history of a once... respectable place.

Nothing more needs to be said. Of course it is abuse, on a public forum, which as far as I can tell, is advocated by a specific moderator here, who should know such behaviour.. should be... well you know. I know... and no doubt, many reading this, also know.

Do you think those people are jerks cause they are?

No. The internet is full of liars and they just got pissed off.

I get lied to on a daily basis.

    You tell me?

I know you never quoted me, but today an influx of jerks intercepted what was, a comfortable conversation about physics... which would have turned, if I had reacted in a circus flame war.

To think it doesn't happen, is denial about what this thread is about.

Beer if you do not lie to others, that is good. I just want some way to tell you I think you are a good person. I do not lie here. I am not calling any here to be liars, but I do think Duck and 421 and Ph are jerks without a cause and that is honest, too.

Echemist, eh, I am not sure. Sometimes seems a good guy and this thread was probably not made from the good guy side, but things can be complex and could have meant to be subconsciously constructive.

You could ask a question about science.

Sometimes I'm intimidated, somethings I feel I should already know, but I sometimes I still ask.

Intimidation is the best course of reaction in most cases. If you feel threatened, forums are not your place, or your mentality of thinking.

Not going to leave it. Beer is a good guy (or girl) - I find you also nice , Chess. Nice people are not exactly a dime a dozen on this forum, so I intend to indulge in their ideas and ways of being so much more so than the ones who think they are cool by making fun of others and calling them woo, and crank. I have never been on another forum where people do shise like that.

Oh but you should. None of us here can protect you, unless I was a moderator myself. The only thing I can do, is give some insight into why Adelade does the moderation they do. Often it isn't fair.

Making a thread with this name is entirely unreasonable.

If exchemist had an ounce of credibility he would apologize.

If he had an ounce of credibility?

I don't really care if he does. Who do I care for....the answer?

You... I want to know your opinion about all of this.

    Very perceptive of you Mayflow.

You annoy the hell out of me, but now that I know why, I feel better - and thus less annoyed (slightly). So I thought I'd share the information, in case it helps others also rationalise why you are so irritating. With a mindset like yours, you are never going to fit in here and are always going to cop a lot of grief, but if you want to hang in nonetheless it's up to you. I've met people like you before and I will never understand what makes you tick. But there we are. It takes all sorts, I suppose (he says, trying to resign himself).

You're actually amazing, psychologically-speaking... I can only gauge this on past experience, but you are ahead of basic emotions. You don't fully feel them, do you? you act on written language, much like myself?

If you don't have a partner you are likely very...femanist. You have very strong beleifs in a system order of not right and wrong, but rather woman accomplishes better than me, or any man. I think you personally hate men, whilst secretely hating yourself. Maybe you are a lesbian, I have speculated this.
