    I had an idea that in a future Mars mission we could establish a magnetic field on Mars through using extremely powerful magnets. This could be done by using strong magnets such as that which is used in the AMS-02 (or the rejected British designed magnet which was to originally go in the AMS-02, but was too short livey yet very powerful). I was wondering whether magnets such as these could be placed at the poles of Mars in order to generate a powerful magnetic field to prevent further large-scale atmospheric loss, this could make the process of terraforming Mars much more plausible, cheaper, quicker and more effective.

    Just a thought anyway, I've no doubt it's not too plausible an idea and you people will probably debunk it anyway- but there's no harm in hypothesising, eh?

    But the original magnet to be used on the AMS-02 is very powerful- so if many of these were used, then an extremely powerful field would be created, would it not?

    I like the concept. I would prefer the method of mining all neodymium from equator and moving out toward the poles and make a north and south polar cap out of that but it would take an awful long time. At a guess I would say at least a third of the planet would have to be stripped. If that has anything to do with why Mars has less atmosphere. I am thinking massive meteor or even planetary collision that melted the planet causing redistribution of magnetic material.

    This is a bizarre concatenation of what, apparently, are a series of misinterpretations.

    1. What makes you think there is an unusual distribution of magnetic material on Mars?
    2. Mars has less atmosphere largely because it has a weaker gravity than the Earth or Venus.
    3. The magnetic field the planet once had was generated in the core.
    4. The Martian dichotomy - Northern Lowlands/southern highlands - may have been cause by a massive impact, but the magnetic field was still in place after this event.
    5. Remnant magnetism has been detected on several locations on Mars. The field strength is orders of magnitude greater than equivalent firled strengths on Earth.
