    time can only tick at one speed. and this is why. energy is movement. the very definition of movement is dependent on time. if time were to change speed anywhere in the universe energy would be gained or lost. it would cause caos. proportions are the only thing that matters. if any of those proportions were to change than the entire mechanism would unravel. this is apparent in the fact that nothing in our universe spontaneously stops working right. matter has such a distinct quantity that cannot be changed. energy has a distinct quantity that cannot be changed. time is no different. as to einstein, changing the gravitational field around a mass of many small moving particles is going to change their speed. clocks tick different in space because of this. time has to stay constant for this to happen.
