Sitting in the heart of the Australian continent, is one of the driest places on earth - the Simpson Desert, within which lies the Lake Eyre Basin and Lake Eyre itself. Approximately 500km inland and 15m below sea level, this enormous natural depression was thought until recently, as almost perennially dry - apart from enjoying some level of divergent replenishment around once per century or so.

Indeed this lake is for years at a stretch, little more than a lonely and entirely dry salt bed, but as now realised; for a short period every seven or so years, becomes satiated with water supplied it by extensive river systems draining into this region, which are in turn charged from as far away as hundreds of kilometers – to the north, by inland rains and subsequent flooding.

This is a remarkable manifestation for a great many reasons, yet a most outstanding contemplation to be made, may be the virtually instantaneous proliferation of fish and crustaceans, apparently flushed into the rapidly swelling inland sea by the draining river flows. More amazing still, is the enormous population of birds that arrive to feed upon this profusion, and proceed to reproduce in great quantities - often out of season. Particularly pelicans and ducks migrate here to take advantage of the relatively rare and spontaneous event, and abundance of it's supply. Presumably these birds flock to the basin from at least 500km south – being by far the nearest coastline.

Such apparently intermittent developments are an extremely interesting consideration, for the astounding thing is – normally sea birds such as pelicans are not at all interested in a region such as this, yet arrive as a result of some cause/impulse, virtually simultaneously with the water entering the lake. So it is clear that (estimates up to) ten million birds take to the air, headed for this region - leaving behind all the comforts and security of their regular home - PRIOR to the lake receiving any water supply.

This truly amazing phenomenon clearly indulges us with an undeniable exposure to a reality that simply cannot be explained, no matter how much spin is applied to the concept; by ‘instinct’, so we might well be required to simply delve elsewhere for a more germane explanation – perhaps even an abundantly more obvious and manifest authenticity, than ‘instinct’ has ever been. Of course, I am referring to INTELLIGENCE – an elementary, profoundly accessible and definable palpability, that I maintain has been forever misunderstood and deemphasised by an inert imagination of humanity – due to a much too long-in-the-tooth general focus and reliance upon the religious proclamations per mythological fancy.
Interestingly enough, it would be abundantly apparent to a Reject, that in every instance we might have previously regarded the concept of 'instinct' to be a reasonable explanation, INTELLIGENCE itself; readily fits the bill to an infinitely more consistent and verifiable degree. And for mine - such a process of veracity, would see the world becoming a consummately less complex environment to interpret.
