    Why the Michelson-Morley experiment failed to detect ether

    The experiment was performed, all inside earth, inside the gravitational field of earth. Thus, everything inside moves as one with earth motion. It is like being inside in a jumbo jet plane. All movement inside the jet moves as one with the jet, meaning. a passenger moves forward, backward, sideward, inside the flying jet moves as one with the jet, though individual movement inside the jet is identifiable, is measurable. Such, too, is light, inside the gravitational field of earth. Light is electro-magnetic, so does the gravitational field of earth. Thus, electro-magnetic CONSTANT light maintains same speed inside the electro-magnetic gravitational field of earth, and moves as one with the electro-magnetic gravitational field of earth. Thus, there is no ripple of ether inside but if the experiment extend from earth to outer space, outside earth gravitational field influence., ripple of ether could be detected, just like air is detectable from outside the jumbo jet...

    The truth is that this type of explanation was one of the first forwarded. It was called the "Aether Drag" hypothesis. The idea that the Earth carries the medium by which light travels with it. This hypothesis was discarded when it was noted that it failed to explain why light arriving from sources far removed from Earth's influence did not behave as it would if this were the case.

    To use your jet example, Imagine a snowflake drifting down from the sky onto you jet. By knowing the speed of the flake's fall and the angle at which it hits the plane we can determine the plane's speed with respect to the air.

    Now imagine that this flake can pass through the inside of the plane (just like light from a distant star can reach the surface of the Earth.) Once it hit the cabin air, it will be drug along with it. If you now measured the angle at which it falls, it will be much smaller. If you try to determine the planes speed from this angle, you'll get a lower value.

    We do the same thing with star light. Since the Earth travels in a circle around the Sun, the angle at which the light from the stars hits the Earth changes over the course of the year. By measuring this apparent shift of position of the stars (called stellar aberration), We can compare it to what we expect to measured given the known orbital velocity of the Earth through independent methods.

    What we find when we do this is that the stars match that which we should see if the light from these stars reach the surface without it ever being deflected by the Earth trying to drag it along with it.

    Thus the Aether drag model (or any other model that tries to ties the velocity of light near the Earth to the Earth's motion) fails because it does not account for all observations.
