    Ha! Ha!

    In the article
"Using the craft’s cameras, the researchers hope to be able to see the hole, which Dr MacLeod described as “a window into the Earth’s interior”.

Hmm? not really. First there is no 'hole' but an absence of crust and as for 'seeing' that's a pretty loose metaphore. More like scratching a soft mortar joint with a pin on a brick on the the outside of the Great Wall of China than seeing anything much in the interior of China.

When we were kids, before colour TV, we believed that if you squinted 'just right' you'd see colour. The crazy part is when I was 7 years old, I remember it working. I'm sure some jounalists can be fed the Jules Verne line and never realize they're eating baloney.

Depends on the scale. You'd have to get the equivalent of one of those Gallactic scales that starts:

"if the Earth is the size of a pea and the sun is a baketball a red giant is the size of....."

"if the hole in Blair's seems big and empty...think of it the size of a pea and the hole in Rumsfeld's head the size of a basketball but compared to the hole in George W. Bush's head think of the Empire State Bui ...."

SO back on topic, is this gonna be a 'one off' a large wound that never healed? as far as I know the 'crust' is the solid bit, the land and sea floor, to suggest the crust is 'missing' to me conjures the thought that the seabed is resting on near molten rock. I reckon it's just a part of the crust that's made of 'mantle' material.
