Only one version has VTOL, and that one is full of compromises. And yes the VTOL J35 is better than the 46 year Harrier design--I should hope so.

Part of the delay is that VTOL is hard to do and the Harrier has been doing it well for 40+ years. One addage of the military is If it aint broke dont fix it. This reasoning is why a pistol was in service for 75 years and a rifle has been being used with minimal changes since the sixties.

VTOL or vertical take off and landing.

Given the designation F-35, this new war plane is a worthy replacement for the harrier jump jet,
which until the introduction of the JSF had been the only other figher plane with VTOL.

I recently learned that pilots are actually scared to fly the f-22, because they pass out or get dizzy while flying the plane. Some fear the f-35 may have the same problems.

I have always been fascinated with these airplanes, but I was shocked when I learned of these problems.

    War plane history:

Just a brief question general overview, though I wink at the notion the JSF is a great plane:

What fighter design, or should I say, what military plane design most contributes to the direction of military aircraft features movements?

I think the former version of the SR-71, an interceptor I recall as designated YF-12 (possibly incorrectly), is likely the greatest design for the movement of military manned flight into the current era.

The best made military gun in history is, imo, the very large browning .50 caliber automatic machine gun, that is for the small weapons. The weapon has been the best of it's type in the world since 1917 and is to this day irreplaceable in the United States military. R. Lee Ermey will stand on that with me to say it.

America has made some very good defense weapons in history. For small arms, the M16 is better than the Ak-47, but variant wise, well, the Russians upgrades have been very well done, too, and the M16 is about 15 years or so behind their original.
