Would you want to go with sonar? I know a lot of robot hobbyists go this route, but it seems like it would be easy for the enemy to jam it and render your robot totally blind.

Maybe go with stereoscopic image analysis (like we human use)? I've been told that the military has some missiles that are able to guide themselves by this means. They're very expensive, so I'm pretty sure they don't see a lot of use. I suppose this would be ideal, but it requires a lot of processing power on the part of the guidance circuitry.

Would any version of Doppler Radar be useful at short range? Is there some possibility I've ignored like sense of smell or proximity sensors?

The best way to do it is to give him his own brain, do not guide him, underwise you can be intercepted by another computer.

the more science you know, the less crap you get.
