What stops some fellow in the middle of nowhere, who owns a machine shop, from making cheap knock off AK-47's, or even M-16's for that matter? Is it simply too sophisticated a process for an ordinary person to accomplish? Does it require massive industrialization?

Hobbyists with access to relatively sophisticated machining equipment can and do make their own guns. My understanding is that although it's possible, it's also relatively difficult and time-consuming, so much so that it's not really worth one's time and effort if you're simply doing it to get the gun; it's more practical to just buy one. But some people do it as a project for the challenge. My guess is that you need lots of large-scale, automated industrial equipment to make it profitable.

Thanks Scifor. That actually makes a lot of sense. You can't really build enough rifles for a third world army if you're spending 1-2 months per rifle, I guess.

Also the fact is that many rifles have small very specifically designed parts, that usually need to be placed with the industrial machines to maintain its specific job, the rifles you would make on your own would most likely not be very effective because of inaccuracy and lack of power. It would be like taking on an M16 with a pellet gun.
