    Why are different types of motor oil used in a car, depending on the seasons??

    tI depends a lot more than the season but also type of engine, heat generated, road conditions, etc.

    I live in Canada. Summer grade oil is like tar when temperatures reach minus 40c or so. In contrast, winter grade oils are too thin at warmer summer temperatures. Most of the wear on an engine isn't from driving but starting and warming up an engine. You need things flowing quickly and properly at a particular viscosity.
