Hello, i just started mechanical engineering, so i'm sorry if it is a stupid question.

I was wondering whether plastic deformation in metals during tensile tests is caused mainly by slip or by the displacement of vacancies.

    thanks in advance.

that can depend on lot of variables, impact test use cooling down the metal, per ASTM e23 you have to cool the metal up to -196K for any impact test, this may reduce the diplacment vacancies significantly,
but at the end test just give you the point of failure or deformation,

cause of material deformation at that stress value whether in test or in practical usage depends a lot that particular material's crystal structure and other properties
