If somebody asked you to pick a number from 1 to 10, do you visualize anything (assuming that you don't pick on a whim, rather you think about it for a while)? For example, if somebody asks me to pick a number, I (subconsciously) visualize a number line, going from 1, 2, 3,... 9, 10, then I choose a number from that number line. Is this what everybody visualizes (again, not on a whim which you just spit out a number, but if your survival depended on choosing a certain number), or do some people visualize a number-pad (right side of your keyboard) or maybe visualize backwards, 10, 9, … 2, 1?

PS: This is for an important project, please answer after thinking through.

I don't "visualize" anything. I just pick a number. There’s no need (for me, anyway) to visualize a number line or anything else in order to do that.

If I visulalize it, it would be at some subconcious level and I don't think it would be a number line. More like those numerals flying around on Sesame Street, probably.

This reminds me of when digital watches first came out. At first I would have to mentally convert the digital reading to what it would look like on a watch with hands.

Well sorry if I add another response that you aren't hoping for but I honestly don't visualize anything.

i dont visualize anything. and then an embossed version of a random number comes flying into my vision.

Don't visualise - the sound of the number, invariably 7, pops into my head.

Teh commonest response, at least in western cultures, is to say seven. Since I know this and like to be awkward I reply 4.8734, or some such. If I am then asked specifically for an integer I shall say 2, since this is one of the least frequent responses.

I would visualize something like this:

That is, 10 dots (with numbers associated to each dot) are placed randomly on a blank surface. To pick a number, I would pick a random region. If a single number is in that region, I am done. If there are more... I just pick another region within that region until I get a single number.

Of course, I am very biased about what regions I tend to pick and how i "randomly" place the numbers. For example, I favor picking something on the right much more than something on the left.

There's a mildly interesting corollary to this. When asked to write out the number line, those whose written language reads left to right, put smaller numbers on the left, higher on the right. Those whose written language reads right to left do the opposite.

Now; what about left-handed people, in either culture? Is there any data?

Unless I am trying to guess what someone else is thinking I too always pick 2 because for some reason its always been my favorite number.

I am lefthanded and it has nothing to do with how I write a number line probably because I still learned everything the same as right handed people.

i would pick the number 9 because of its properties. consider the number 59.if you add 5 and 9 you get 14 and adding 1 and 4 you get 5. as if the number 9 does not exist.

    I'd pick 11, because I mis-read the question.

lol, how true. I would just skip the question as i did not see it
As is often the case with technical subjects we are presented with an unfortunate choice: an explanation that is accurate but incomprehensible, or comprehensible but wrong.

    I just imagine giant numbers

    7

Something like that, but far larger, in black font with a plain white background.
My numbers are NORMALLY 4 and 7. No reason why, they just are. I don't really think about it much, they just pop into my head.
