# Thread: Help Mac with Math

1. I know there is an easy mathmatical solution to my problem, but I'm a little rusty with my geometry, and I was hoping one of you math whizzes who enjoy solving equations could help ole Mac out.

I'll put it in the form of a word problem:

Mac owns a computer monitor with a diagonal measurement of 19" (46 cm), and has a standard aspect ratio of 4:3. Mac would like to buy a new widescreen monitor with an aspect ratio of 16:9. He would like both monitors to have aprox. the same screen height. What size widescreen monitor (measured diag.) would he have to buy so that both monitors are approx. the same screen height?

(I guess I could just pull out a measuring tape...but what's the fun in that?)

Thanks

2.

3. A right triangle with height 3 and length 4 has a hypotenuse of length 5 (3-4-5 right triangle). If the hypotenuse is 19 then the height is 19*3/5=11.4.

Your new monitor will have a width of 11.4*16/9=20.27. The diagonal is the square root of the sum of the squares of the sides, or 23.25 inches.

4. Cool!! Thanks Harold...That's some fancy cipherin' there.
You rock!

My 9th grade geometry teacher just got a cold shiver from me not remembering the pythagorean theorem.

So I need a 23 or 24" widescreen...cool.

Thanks

Now if I can only convince someone to buy me one of these: :-D
