    Hello,

    The y = a 0 + a1 x1 + a2 x2 + a3 x3.

    So let e.g. y = 5 + 4x1 + 6x2 + 2x3 and ai = ∂y/∂xi

Can someone please axplain how to yield ai ?

I know it's a very, very simple task, but I can't remember it exactly since it's been a long time since I've studied derivations.

    Thanks.

To do a partial derivative, treat the variable on the bottom as a variable and all other variables as constants and then do a normal derivative. And since this is a polynomial the only rule you need is that .

Thank you very much. To interpret the derivations results, the result shows how much will y vary if the xi is varied and all other variables are kept constant, right?

Yeah. One way to interpret is how much does vary in the direction.
