hi, i would like to know on intuitive terms why roughly 68% of a randomly sampled population falls within 1 standard deviation of the mean and 95% within 2 sd etc. There doesn't seem to be any explanations on the web besides simply citing the CLT or some hocus pocus with arcane calculus symbols. Thanks

In what sense do you mean intuitive Jarwulf? The standard deviation / percentile relationship is what is true for the normal distribution. Are you asking why that is tryue or why people like to use the normal distribution as an approximation for the real distribution in question?

As is often the case with technical subjects we are presented with an unfortunate choice: an explanation that is accurate but incomprehensible, or comprehensible but wrong.
