# Thread: the probability functions

1. hi,
I'm PhD student in computer science.
I'm working in swarm algorithm,my supervisor asked me to use one suitable probability functions in the equation of swarm.

where the swarm has two equation ,one for update the velocity for each particle and the other for update of position of particle.

I do not know what the probability functions and what is the benefit of it, and how adaptive with these equations ?

I did not need to search for PSO, because I know it and I placed algorithm for it.
my query were how I can adapt (change)the random values in equation of PSO to work well.
in equation , there are three values of random. what is the best function to generate random valuse. is that depend on the problem?

Of course. Sorry, not you. I meant mathman for asking you to define PSO like that which you already presented as "PSO(particle swarm optimization)".

I would suggest asking the moderators to move this to the Computer Science section of this forum, you'll probably find an answer there. Or start a new thread there.
And as I have no useful knowledge in computer science, all I can say is to research in links.

I'm not sure how the algorithm works. Do you just need a function that takes any input and spits out a result for randomized use? I'm assuming you'll need to come up with a PRNG (pseudo-random number generator) function. Again I'm not knowledgeable on the subject and you'll probably want to ask in the Computer Science subforum.

Good suggestion. I would suggest a new thread there with "particle swarm optimization" in the title. The title of this thread is so vague, it is not likely to attract people with the expertise you are looking for.  Tags for this Thread
