I have asked regarding IMO before, but i got no response, so i will attempt to ask again. Has anyone participated in the IMO before?

This year 2010 IMO, my friends went to Kazakhstan for the competition, (im planning to join next year), they did pretty well, average of 70%.

The questions i believe they give in IMO are like group theory, combinatorics, abstract algebra, complex analysis etc... Why dont they give differential equations and calculus?

cos calculus is not intended to be a useful tool for solving competition maths problems, dont ask me why tho.

I guess focus is on mathematical reasoning and logical thinking rather than computational skills.

Calculus problems can often be solved with drastically different ways depending on how much mathematics you have studied making those competitions more of a knowledge test than an actual test of mathematical reasoning and problem solving.
