    i'm in a bit of a conundrum.
i'm trying to figure out how much thicker a surface is in percentages, so that i can multiply it with another number to figure out the % ratio. or something like that.

    i have the number 436 and 580.

i wanted to find out which number to multiply 436 with to get 580.
so i figured, lets do it the old percentage way.

    i did this:
    580/100 = 5.8
    436/5.8 = 75.1724
    100-75.1724 = 24.8276

    however, when i multiplied 436 by 1.248276, i get 544, not 580.
in order to get 580, i need to do this:

    580/436 = 1.33028
    then i multiply 436 by 1.33028.

so why is it that 436 is 75% of 580, but 580 is 133% bigger than 436?

when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth

    The simple answer is:
    75% = 0.75 = 3/4
    133.333...% = 1.33... = 4/3
