    Hello,

I study human cognition, particularly linguistic cognition. I run many of my experiments through the Web. If you are interested in the reasons, you can read about some of them here: http://www.newscientist.com/blog/sho...-in-crowd.html.

If you have a few minutes, please drop by and participate in an experiment or two. I try to keep experiments to about 5 minutes each, though some may be faster. You can find them at the Cognition and Language Lab: http://coglanglab.org.

One new experiment looks at linguistic processing: http://coglanglab.org/DaxStory. It turns out that there is much more going on in language than meets the eye. At the end of the experiment, you will be given some information about the purpose of the experiment.

Thank you for your time. I hope you enjoy the experiments. They are usually pretty interesting.

i'm sorry to say that the reasoning behind the dax story completely bypassed me - what's it all about ?

I'd prefer not to explain the study here, since it may effect how other people do the experiment. But if you'd like to email me at coglanglab@coglanglab.org, I'd be happy to give you some more information.

GhostofMaxwell is right that cognition=thinking, but cognition isn't necessarily conscious thinking. For instance, towards the beginning of the first Lord of the Rings movie, the ring is dropped. There is a slow-motion sequence of it falling, then it hits the ground and sticks. It does not bounce. During the fall, you had already computed the expectation that it would bounce. Once it failed to do so, you may have thought, "How strange. It should bounce." Or you may have simply registered that something odd happened, without puzzling through it consciously. That would still be cognition.

Cognitive psychology sometimes includes aspects of perception and other phenomena that you might not generally consider "thinking".
