I attend creationism/ID meetings to defend against misrepresentations of science. Since there is no debate, I don't attend to do so, I just go expecting a valid scientific argument, explain why what was delivered wasn't one, and point out any misrepresentations of science presented at these meetings. I am blogging my experiences doing so here:

    https://silkworm.wordpress.com/

I plan on branching out to defending misrepresentations of science in other places, but those presented by the creationism/ID movement are the most pressing and hit closest to home so that's my current focus.

For those of you who were familiar with my "Defending Science" blog, found at http://silkworm.wordpress.com between February 2006 and May 2007, I regret to inform you that my blog was hijacked by spammers and, as a result, shut down by wordpress.com due to violation of the Terms of Service. Wordpress is not responding to any of my requests for access to my content, and appear to have a NO TOLERANCE policy when it comes to Terms of Service violations.

For anyone out there who may have a hard disk copy of anything from my the "Defending Science" blog, please notify me immediately at my new blog at http://brockwichita.wordpress.com/, which is mirrored at http://brockwichita.blogspot.com/.

Thank you for your help and support.

    Silkworm,
I missed your original post on this topic, so regretably I had never visited your blog, or captured any part of it.
I wish you well with this venture. It requires a certain tenacity (and doubtless some courage) to enter the lion's den (to borrow a metaphor) - though doubtless it also delivers some amusing moments and much satisfaction.

Thanks Ophiolite. Hope is still not lost. There seems to be a tiny chance that wordpress will still help me.

tried the link - it seems to be working + bringing up what looks like sensible content whereas earlier in the day the link seemed to be dead

Yes, late in the day Wordpress tried to grant me admin access again, but there's still a problem with the password. In the meantime the blog has been available to the public with the spam links. In that time I've been able to archive and repost much of the content at my new blog http://glorifiedape.wordpress.com.

I'm abandoning the brockwichita blog at wordpress, and the blogger blog has also been changed to glorifiedape.

Even if I don't regain access to my old blog, I'm still in good shape. Thank you for the support.

Why do you feel the need to 'convert' religious folk?

Are their beliefs harmful to you or your culture?

I met a woman recently with a baby who had severe genetic deformities.

Mishapen skull - needs operation and springs insterted to help it to grow normally

    No fingers

    Cleft pallet

And perhaps other things not immediately visible

She said what keeps her 'strong' and 'positive' is her 'faith'.

Who are we/you to take that away from people like her who need a little 'something' to get them through the day.

Madeline McCanns parents are getting through their day with the help of their 'faith' and that 'network' of people.

People all over the world are similarly supported and feel a sense of peace and contentment due to their belief system.

As a scientist, your science is your source of comfort, and perhaps when trouble hits your source of comfort is your logic.

BUT not everyone in this world has the same intelligence, inner strength, frienship/family circle and so they need a little something extra to enable them to function. It works for many. Why elect to be miserable when there is an alternative.

There is afterall no absolute truth only what we are biologically predisposed to observe as the truth.

So live and let live UNLESS they are being violent and destructive, which at the end of the day goes against MOST religions code of behavior. Though we also know that doesn't stop them!
'Time is the space between birth and death' by me.

Very clearly, you haven't read SilkWorm's blog at all.

Hey, silkworm, I think you should also try to prove that science isn't anti-religion, nor is religion anti-science, because I think that one of the biggest problem is that people believe that the two are mutually exclusive(both scientists and theists are guilty). They fail to see that while both seek to explain our existence, one is broad (religion), while the other aims at specifics (science). Religion, for example, would say "God created that little bird", while science would go into details about the evolution of the bird, its species, kingdom, etc.

This creates the misunderstanding you're fighting against, as, believe it or not, the people who make the most noise are religious people who believe that science is bent on taking the place of their God; people who fail to see that science is a neutral thing; people who would do anything to save their religion, and thus fight against science without really understanding it.

    ...babbles on...

    Science really isn't anti-religious.

But, clearly, many religious organizations are anti-science. This fact cannot be ignored. The "culture war" is perpetuated by religion and it is religion that has launched its "attacks" on topics ranging from stem cell research to disease control to biology and even archaeology.

What SilkWorm does is defend science from these attacks, primarily in the form of speaking out at public gatherings where the religious hope to establish one-sided dialogs with the often under-educated public. SilkWorm does this by interjecting and asking questions at these gatherings, using their own "battleground" against them by getting the public to think and question for themselves. He presents the voice of reason where they would rather reason didn't interfere.
