OK, I know it's backwards, but here's the thing. I'm saying goodbye. This site really isn't ringing my bell any longer - in brief I think that most of you are either intellectually lazy or worse.

I have tried really hard to lift the standard of discussion on this site, along with a few others, who I shall name it a bit.

My efforts seem to have been more-or-less in vain, Although I had a lot of help from river_rat, serpicojr, and also some really fun discussions with wallaby and one or two others, I have concluded that the rest of you are a bunch of tossers, and that this site is not really for me any longer.

So I'll see you around, maybe.

Look forward to it . I'm quite young so I can't really 'get into' discussion here. I do admit that this forum is a bit backwards with each other.
Until we meet again, live long and prosper, and may the force be with you

Well ok then. Maybe you should sign-up to that scientist/academic site? This site is one for us mere mortals. In future, stop complaining! It won’t accomplish anything anyway. Just leave quietly.

You've helped me learn a lot Guitarist. Thank you for that. Come back in a few months and hopefully I will have finished learning calculus and physics. I'll do my best to try to return the favor.
The most important thing I have learned about the internet is that it needs lot more kindness and patience.

    Yes you were.
[quote"Guitarist"]the rest of you are a bunch of tossers[/quote]

Guitarist, do you include the following individuals in the 'bunch of tossers'

Spurious Monkey - who has a very solid grasp of biology and provides interesting posts and useful responses to questions.
Skin Walker - whose rare appearances are always detailed, analytical and thorough.
Pendragon - who asks probing questions and provides unusual perspectives.
MitchellMckain - carefully reasoned, tightly constructed posts.

These are random examples: I could continue with dozens more, but I hope you get the point. Now this is a discussion forum, it is not the Nobel Prize Committee. If you expected more from it, it may be that the fault lay in your expectation rather than in the capacity or desire of members to deliver.

I and several others have valued your contributions here. I am disappointed that you have chosen to lessen your reputation by the immature style of your departure.

hear hear - i felt like saying something of the sort to him as well. I may not contribute much, my early posts may have been a bit lacking, and my later posts may have been too few and far in-between.

    bunch of tossers? hardly!

but he's gone. I presume he isn't going to check these replies, so a so long I felt would suffice from me.

Well it's a shame that you have decided to move on. I'm not sure you are aware of this but many of us have read and learnt from your post's and will continue to learn from the people you have mentioned. One of the thing i will not miss though is your intellectually pompous, self-righteous, egocentric attitude to most of the other forum members. You always reminded me of a school teacher who gets his kicks (and probable creams his pants) from belittling his students. So on reflection, from one tosser to another, good'riddance.

Well, I for one can't say much about guitarist, because I don't recall ever engaging in any real discussion with him. I imagine that probably goes for other forum members who don't frequent the same forums he did. So it seems to me he's casting judgment on the whole population when he's really only sampled a few sub-groups. Not very scientific, and most certainly not very fair. And as Ophiolite said, if he's trying to compare us to Nobel Laureates, he's also making an unrealistic judgment. Some of us are less experienced than others; our only true uniting factor is our interest in discussing science with other people. Nobody ever said this place is akin to a PhD lab meeting.
Man can will nothing unless he has first understood that he must count on no one but himself; that he is alone, abandoned on earth in the midst of his infinite responsibilities, without help, with no other aim than the one he sets himself, with no other destiny than the one he forges for himself on this earth.
    ~Jean-Paul Sartre

Again! Not on the list! You think my two thousand post contribution would count for some respect. Especially since a lot of them try to deliver fact-filled arguments. Hmph. That hurts, ophiolite.

considering Ireland as an island, is joined and typically magical creatures do not differentiate between two exactly the same environments, i say there are Lephrecauns in Ireland, and have been for quite a while.

Guitarist would likely get a kick out of the direction this thread ended up taking. Penguins are better though, and they take the focus off of his childish rant.

Pretty funny that he had to announce his departure though, most people just stop coming to forums they don't enjoy and refrain from singing show tunes and belittling the whole community.

I was merely using the third person impersonal, anyways, let's hop Guitarist makes a comeback when he finds all the other 'fora' are also tossers.

We all go on breaks. For example when the "watch this topic" button stops working and you don't realize that people have responded to your topic.

I think I'm going off topic... sorry.

I'm sorry he left. He was a cool dude.

I agree that the condesending shpeel was a little out of place. It was probably talking about me though, and I'm sorry.

    I will post an obituary.

    I do try to contribute

    am I that bad?

    Do I annoy you?!

There was so much hostility in the notice of departure!

    Did I offend him?

    I'm sorry!

I know he misses us all (by as many miles as he can) - seriously I hope the guy is ok, sometimes people leave because they have some trauma, suffer a deep personal loss, etc etc I guess that's the effect we have, anyway I reckon he'll fly over from time to time and look around and when he reads this thread I hope he realises how right he was and how much he reduced the average IQ on site by leaving, for that he can never be forgiven.

OK folks. An un-named agent has asked me to think again. And I am.

First let me say this. Yes, I was having a childish tantrum when I left, for reasons which may not be wholly connected to this forum. Sorry if I gave any offence.

Second let me say that the epithet "tosser" here (UK) isn't usually considered an invitation for a smack in the mouth. Once again, sorry if it gave offence.

Third let me say that I did enjoy my time here, I made some good "friends", many of whom I didn't name, as I assumed they knew who they were.

Finally, I thank those of you who made flattering comments about me. (And also those who didn't; yes, I know I can be arrogant, pompous, didactic, dogmatic, blah, blah... in fact I was told that by my wife only last night)

I will think again about this site, but I have a load of personal shit to sort out first

We all know Guitarist was a pretty mathy-type of guy. I think he went over the edge, with our help of course. That is the real reason he left us.
