Hey everyone, Burkey here from QLD, Australia. Part time student of Science, majoring in Biology, Part time tinkerer and experimenter. I made this site to get involved with the DIY science community, and in the hopes to find some collaborators on some projects I am working on.

Look forward to getting to know everybody.

    Burkey

    Part time tinkerer
    My kinda guy!

    Cue my theme music.

Just let me know if you need help experimenting on Shlunka. I've got a high-voltage power supply from a tube laser I want to try out.
    shlunka likes this.
    Fixin' shit that ain't broke.

Ohhhhhh, giddity! Now you speakin my language, anything over 1mW is a "dangerous Weapon" in Aus, (we're such puss-say's) I think a Guinea pig could easily handle at least 10! I've always wanted to play with something high powered

Dude, you can get close to a watt of optical power out of the laser LED from a Blue ray burner. It's hot enough to pop a balloon.

    Here's a 500mW version...I've seen them as high as 1300mW.

    G'day mate.

    :-)
Sometimes it is better not knowing than having an answer that may be wrong.

Hello burkey, and welcome to the forum. I look forward to hearing about some of the projects you are working on. My own areas of interest are psychology and nutrition and the effects of working graveyard shift long term. I am presently doing a bit of an experiment on the effects of supplemental vitamin D in relation to the above. I am the sole subject of this voluntary study but I have as observers and controls several of my co-workers and a few others with whom I have interacted long enough to have a respectable baseline to compare to.

So step up to the plate and tell us just what kind of a 'mad scientist' you currently are or aspire to be...

I love how you say" I am the sole voluntary subject..." Hahah, I've done graveyard shift once, the 9pm - 6am stint - I last three weeks. It destroyed me, I was a completley different person during that time. It can't just be the lack of vitamin D, I put it down to messing with your Circadian rhythm, I was reading a paper/article the other day that says us Biological species are programmed along side sunrise and sunset times. How long have you been doing it for? and more importantly how much longer you got in you? And has the Vitamin D helped?

Lets see what kindof mad scientist do I aspire to be:
Well atm studing Bach. of Science Maj. in Biology - My main aim with all of this is to use it as a stepping stone into Astrobiology, I want to get in on the study of where life itself comes from. However I am also currently teaching myself electronics, programming ect, and the course is good, getting a nice sample of different fields.
I've always been a bit of a tinkerer and the genetic engineering craze seems to fit in very nicely so that is also a possibility. Will have to see where I end up I suppose.
    .
here's some of the latest projects I've been playing around with

    - Installed touch screen to a marine fish tank - to monitor levels and control lighting etc.
    - Creating a Timeline of the Evolution of the Universe, am also tying to set up a Time Trek in Australia as originally made by K & H Lehto, in Finland - timetrek.com.au (would love feedback on this by the way, I am seeking collaborators to work with me on the Timeline information ect, with the hopes to make to best darn timeline you ever seen)
    - For my birthday this year I have gotten all of my freinds and family to chuck in for a microscope.... Man I cannot wait - my birthday is in 15 days :-) - My hope is to create a online interactive microscope (from images I capture) - But alos this will be used for some research I have in mind.
    - A big project I am working on atm that I thought would be easier than it has prooved. Is I want to find a way to measure the speed of light at home using relitivley simple parts - Now I know in theory this can be done, hell this bloke got within 5% in the 1800's surely I can do it.

So yeah, I like to keep myself busy - But the one thing is, I never have anybody helping me, My girlfreind mostly just shakes her head and calls me crazy, and my mates don't now what I am doing half the time, Soooo Hey Guys :P Lets make science
