Hello. I am a technically trained and minded person, who likes to think about how things work - from the Universe to the human body. My original training was to degree level in electronic systems, but I have a very diverse technical and practical knowledge, and I am now an airline pilot. (Having said that, I can't work this keyboard! Can someone tell me how to make the carriage return (enter key) work on here? i.e. how do I start new paragraphs?).

I use a desktop PC for internet. I don't use my phone for it unless it's an emergency- as such could be called an emergency.

Accessing the internet on a cell phone is a bit like watching a movie on a pocket watch.
It's like eating just one potato chip and then closing the bag.
It's like getting in your car and driving down your driveway to check the mail.
It's like using a single L.E.D. as a car headlight.
It's like going to the Moon in a Volkswagon.

    Maybe I'm just a luddite.

Yeah, see... I was referring to the smartphone... I never even tried accessing the internet from the brick, even in an emergency.
Although I preferred the brick. I had an RL-4930 for many years and turned down two upgrades in order to keep it. That was a rugged and reliable phone. Which of course meant they had to stop making it.

There was noway to replace it. I upgraded and got a spiffy touchscreen snazzy flashy cell phone that can change a lightbulb, mow the lawn, tutor the kids, walk the dog and all the other dazzly-do cell phones can do these days.

I have been on the internet with it. But only because someone held a gun to my head. And when I say, "gun" - I mean it in the truest sense of the word.

No, this biff off held a howitzer next to my skull and demanded I access the cellular version of this here interweb or he'd yank the chain and demolish my brain case.
I refused, said go ahead and do it then.
"I would... but I don't know how to load it... I need to google how to operate the Howitzer, see..."
"Oh... why didn't you say so? Let's see google... Howitzer..."

Oh, it's that sort of forum is it? That's a pity. There was me thinking this might be a sensible, intelligent space, where I might be able to have a decent conversation. Any comments or help from the forum modulators? - why would all the keys on the keyboard work, EXCEPT the return key of all things? Seems pretty wacky to me - I am using a totally standard HP PC, and the return key works on all the other sites. By the way... One beer...... Think about it.

If you are going to judge the nature of an entire community of people based on a single (possibly)lighthearted response from ONE member, then that says way more about you than it does about this forum.

In any case, it isn't likely that someone can fix your "carriage return" when the only info you give about it is that it doesn't work. Your initial post didn't offer any info about when it stopped working, what events led up to not working, whether or not it never works or only sometimes works, what model keyboard you are using, what operating system you are using or what type of device you are using.

Not to mention, keyboards are insanely temperamental and usually once a key is broken it stays that way. Especially if you are using a laptop. The cost involved to fix it if it is mechanical isn't usually worth the trouble when you can get a cheap usb keyboard for about $10 these days and just use that. If it is a software issue that could be pretty involved and again, requires a lot of information to diagnose it.

Also, if you ever check trouble shooting manuals for any type of mechanical device, the first thing the manual asks is, Is the device plugged in? Then, Is the device powered on?

Asking for the simplest solution first is protocol in trouble shooting technical issues with any device or appliance.

I got a new computer with Windows 8, and all of a sudden the return key doesn't work when I use Internet Explorer. It works when I use Google Chrome, though.

It could be a physical problem- in which the keyboard itself has an issue or it could be a software clash as others have experienced. More information is needed.
Since it's a standard PC- have you tried swapping out keyboards?

Edit to add: Works on all other sites... So is this the only place where it does not work? Because you said it doesn't work in your first post ever made. If it is only here- You should PM ADMIN and see if he can suss out the cause of that.

Right. Forgive me - perhaps I did not explain myself very well - although:
Can someone tell me how to make the carriage return (enter key) work on here?.
seemed pretty clear to me, (my emphasis on this quote). I generally log into 4 or 5 different forums every day, (incidentally using what seems to be the exact same look, layout and software as the others I use). In between this I might write documents or input stuff on spread sheets, all using this same PC. So I know that my keyboard and the return key work. This site is the only one on which the return/enter key is not recognised in the posting area, I therefore asked if anyone knew why. I get a facetious reply asking if I've tried pressing the key.... I am trained in electronics, as stated, so I do know how to fault-find electronic systems, and that might just have occurred to me. My facetious answer was directed at that facetious individual. "Showing my age" was deliberate, so you would know I'm not a spotty 13 year old just being a nuisance, unlike AlexG. Cheers! OB

You were mostly clear, but you can never fully account for the idiocy of the reader. In this case; me.
I just clicked Settings at top right then General settings most-way down left hand side and looked through my settings to see if there was anything on there dealing with whether or not the enter key makes a new line- I think Yahoo Messenger has that as a setting...
I did not see it as a setting, here.
I'm set to standard editor, not WYSIWYG or such.
You may fiddle with that and get results- but I'd really suggest you just PM Admin, that's his handle here, and ask him. He's the forum Tech.

You must admit- this forum and this forum alone having a failure of the enter key is a bit of a first.

Hi One beer and welcome to the forum. I know where you are coming from, because I had that same problem for a while. Can't tell you what caused it or why I quit having the problem. Have you tried using more than one browser? Currently I'm using the latest Firefox and it works good. I also upgraded my IE to IE10 and it seems to work fine now. One way I was able to get around the problem was I would just start typing in the new post box and then move the cursor back to the start of my typed message, then hit enter and it worked.

    Anyway have a cold one

    Thank you for the welcomes.

Hey guess what, I am now logged in using Firefox instead of Explorer, as suggested, and the return key works!!

How weird is that? - I would have thought that the most robustly coded or most commonly recognised input keys would be the return/enter and the ESC.

And why would any software not recognise these keys??

Anyway, that's all sorted now - thanks for the tip.

    Cheers!

The other thing I was going to suggest was going to the Settings page and changing from whatver-the-default-editor-type-is to the more basic one. (You might still try that if wnat/have to go back to IE.)

Just as an aside: we have had some self-proclaimed "geniuses" (despite the evidence to the contrary) on the forum who have never mastered simple things like paragraphs or quoting. This might account for the comment from AlexG (who is well known as a grumpy bugger ).

Want an honest confession? I often feel bad for "liking" someones post. It's like a black mark on their post.
"Oh... if that guy likes what you had to say, then I certainly don't."
The purpose of the "like" button is to show your support. I'm never really sure if I'm showing support or doing them a disservice.

Your welcome. Hope you can get along with Firefox's crappy spell checker. In this forum when you get done typing add a smilie face and the spell checker will highlight your typo's then you can delete the smilie face if you want. You don't have to do this in other forums. However, this spell checker is pitiful but better than nothing.
