I would like to formulate a questionnaire for Indian citizens to find out their perception of science and how much they believe in science vis-a-vis the ancient Indian thought. Let me explain a bit more. Ancient Indian philosophies dwelt at length on the creation of everything what we see around us. Starting from Mohanjadaro-Harappan civilization( Indus valley civilization start date 3000 years before Christ) right up to swamy Vivekananda in the 20th century Indian philosophers tried to explain the creation ,the life on our mother earth, how to lead a good life (Jains and Gautam Buddha). In the process Indian culture gave birth to many wonderful facets of human life. Especially Indian thinkers and great philosophers created some of the best sciences in music, dance, sculpture, linguistics, astronomy, good ethics of human life etc. All these thoughts and the sciences survived 5000 years and are treated today as among the best in the world.
But when it comes to precision sciences like Physics,Mathematics,Chemistry,Biology etc the contribution of ancient Indians is limited to a few contributions like invention of Zero and decimal system in mathematics, metullurgical technologies like iron, copper, bronze, brass, silver, gold, mercury.
Foreign invasions and destruction of some of the ancient Indian heritages did halt the development. It is a matter of human history.
The contributions of modern Indian scientists like J.C.Bose,C.V.Raman and many others are in furthering the cause of western science and technology. Inspite of such contributions majority of ordinary Indians today lack scientific thinking as defined by modern science. A lot of blind beliefs and practices pervade through the Indian psyche. This statement of mine is a very general and unfounded by a serious scientific data base. I want to create such a data base. If the data base changes my statements I am willing to change my statements.
I request all those who are interested in my quest to respond. Such a quest may be relevant not only to India but may be relevant to many countries of the world.
