By the medieval era, there were jobs that offered decent payment without making people rich. Still, throughout the nineteenth century, citizens were just called wealthy or poor. It was not until we were a few decades in to the twentieth century when there was finally a concept of a middle class. Was that a matter of reinforcing the power and conceived superiority of those who had plenty of financial assets? Did the rich just want to call all people with less money than they had poor, even if it was numerically inaccurate, so that they wouldn't have to deal with them?

I don't know the answer to this but I found an interesting discussion on the Quora site

Shakespeare was hardly typical but the discussion about his status by these seemingly learned people is fairly informative and possibly instructive.
