I'm going to do my phd in Maritime history, specifically, Whaling, Piracy, and Life on ships. Are any of you studying this topic, or similar topics? Do you have suggestions or excellent sources for me to explore?

That sounds like a fascinating topic. My own interests in maritime history are restricted to naval battles of the first half of the 20th century, at one extreme, and the possible role of ocean travel in the dispersal of early humans, at the other. (In relation to the former I had an interesting visit last weekend to the battleship Texas, a WWI ship, preserved to the south east of Houston.)
I wish you luck with your research.

Dispersal of Early Humans...and you're from Scotland? Hmm...Have you come across the theory that the Trojan War was actually fought in the English Channel and the surrounding area and that Homer's Odyssey took place in the area also?
