I think Kosovo has every right to become independent. There are no clearly defined rules for when a country should become independent or not, but let's list some reasonable points:

    1)The country has a distinctive culture/ethnicity
    2)The people concerned want independence
3)No minorities are harmed by independence
4)There is some need or urgency for independence

This list of requirements is quite strict, but I think Kosovo passes each of them.
Point 1 is no problem: Kosovo, as an Albanian region, has a very different background then Serbia. Their language is unrelated, and in majority they have a different religion (Islamic vs Orthodox).
About point 2 I don't know much. Maybe someone knows statistics about what percent of Kosovo's population wants independence.
Point 3 may be a problem. There's a significant number of Serbians in the region, and they would certainly be harmed by a separation of Kosovo. If the borders between the ethnic groups are clear then the problem can be solved, but I heard that the groups are quite mixed territorially so it's hard to distinguish the boundary of Kosovo. But maybe someone has more information on this.
Point 4 is clearly in support of independence. In 1999 Serbian troops have massacred many Kosovars and made many flee the area, so the people of Kosovo have every reason to prefer independence.

One question though: would an independent Kosovo really create a state for itself, or would it immediately join Albania? What is your opinion on this?

Despite of Kosovo we've got another region in Europe that wan't to be independent: Pridnestrovje(sorry for spelling). This territory debates for adding to Russia, without Russians agreement.

Indeed. I've visited Pridnestrovie last spring, and they indeed want independence. But in the case of Pridnestrovie it's a bit difficult because it's not ethnically homogenous (30% of the population is Romanian and strongly disagrees with separation from Moldavia), and because it's lead by a dictator.

But Pridnestrovie does passes most of the requirements. They have been at war with Moldova (after being discriminated by the Moldavian government) and a majority of the population shares nothing with Moldavia (not the language, the religion, the goals for the future etc). But the Romanian minority would certainly be harmed, so I don't know whether to support Pridnestrovie or not.
