Before the Roman Empire (I assume) designated the planets with Roman (Greekish) Gods, how were Mars and Venus named by what ever European tribes had a name for them. (there might be multiple designations in various dialects, but does any particular have survived history so that we can say, some tibes called Mars "..." and called Venus "..." ?

(BTW did Greeks call Mars with the equivalent god Ares, and Venus with the greek equivalent Aphrodites?)

I'm confused (which is easy for me), but I've researched this before, and I don't understand how the Greek used two sets of names:

    Hermes, Aphrodite, Ares, Zes, Kronos

    Phainon, Phaethon, Pyroeis, Phosphoros, Stilbon

Apparently one set is the gods associated with the planets, and the other is the planets themselves. But it's confusing. For example, if I google Stilbon, I find it refers to the god associated with the planet Mercury and also the planet Mercury itself. Yet, it's drummed into schoolkids that Hermes is the equivalent of Mercury, both as a god and the planet. Stilbon means "the gleamer", so is it more of a nickname for the planet?
