I remember a story about some king or soldier that was in madly in love with a woman that didnt care much about him.

He went across the world in a quest to find her something special, and he did. I think it was a huge diamond.

Anyway when he came back to her she still wasnt interested and he committed suicide.

I cant remember the details much, maybe she was dead and he died from grief or maybe there WAS a happy ending. The important part was that he traveled around the world to get something that would win her favor.

Does someone here know what story im talking about?

Edit: Not a fairytale though it may sound like it, this actually happened. Without names or time period to go by searching for the name of the story and people in it has proved most difficult

Could it be the Fisher King, in love with Orgeluse? He gave her valuable stuff and she rejected him and married Gawan. The FK was wounded by the spear that a Roman soldier stabbed Jesus with on the cross, and could be saved by the Holy Grail but didn't want to be saved. I think he was anyway.

As you say, not a fairy tale, no not at all :P

Sounds kind of like F. Scott Fitzgerald's "Great Gatsby"; I haven't read it for many years but it reminds me of that.

    Two problems, though:

    1) "Gatsby" was a fictional account, a novel.

    2) That story line has been used probably dozens of times in the literature. Young man, spurned by a lovely, embarks on a quest to win the heart of his beloved. Either ends up "happily ever after" or in tragedy.

It sounds nothing like The Great Gatsby...
