    I'm not quite sure how to figure out the answer to this question. In the 1940's what was the best way to transport materials? What was cheaper? What was faster? Railroads? Trucks? Boats? I assume everything was gas powered.

    All things being equal if possible I guess. I guess I want to know specifically if a railroad that travels around the Black Sea is a better means of shipping than just using a boat, but if possible I'd like to find out the most general answer possible.

    Boat has always been substantially most efficient in terms of fuel. For example Detroit is situated on a waterway, the finished autos are loaded onto boats and delivered even to domestic markets, where accessible, by sea.

    You might get better time by freight train, but not generally I guess. In a straight and level race the train will win. However railroads have to follow an elevation so they waste a lot of length meandering as the contours do. Oncoming trains, fallen trees, sabotage etc. all cause train delays.

    For speed and foolproof logistics you can't beat trucks. But for 1940s Eastern Europe I think the highways were still following funny old courses in contrast to railroads laid for the modern era, connecting relevant points by the shortest route possible. So perhaps the truck must take a scenic route, and lose the race.
