Niacin is known to be a water-soluble vitamin. It was discovered as a nutrient during the studies of pellagra. However, niacin can be synthesised in the body unlike the other vitamins (except vitamin K). The required amino acid, trytophan allows synthesis of niacin. Can anyone explain how tryptophan gets converted to niacin and how efficient the reaction is?
