Reuters and other news agencies are reporting that the Delta variant (DV) is beginning to infect many children who have not been vaccinated, or cannot be vaccinated due to age limitations on emergency approval for the vaccines (1,2). As of August 14, the number of children in the U.S. infected by the virus is clearly skyrocketing, with over 1900 hospitalized just last Saturday alone (1). The numbers of children going to hospitals with this deadly disease is increasing due to the virulence of DV. New records of hospitalizations are also being set for age groups of 18-29, 30-39 and 40-49, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control (1). Not surprisingly, mortality in these age groups is the highest since the start of the pandemic.

The majority of these cases occur in states where their Governors refuse to allow mandates to be enforced, which would otherwise significantly minimize infections. Since the Governors clearly are not experts in control of the disease, and are taking steps which ensure its spread and the deadly results, should they be held accountable for the massive increase in cases in their states? Some would say that they are practicing medicine without a license, which is clearly illegal. Recall that one of the primary tenants of medical practice is "Do no harm". That is not the case in these states. These Governors are doing enormous harm, and it is only ramping up while they continue to defy logical and long-established medical practices for controlling a pandemic

How should such "Dr. Governors" be dealt with? Perhaps the voters in their states will have a say when they come up for re-election (though that is a long way off). Some believe that they should be arrested for negligence resulting in death or severe long-term health problems. It would seem to some that such remarkably incompetent people, who control the health of millions of people in their states, be brought to justice. But it appears unlikely that such rational punishment will be meted out. The only punishment which is resulting from their ignorance is reserved for the people in their states who contract the disease and end up on the short end of the stick.

Adults deserve to live as much as children, but most adults can make the decisions which can help prevent severe infections. The children are at the mercy of their often ill-informed parents, and the Dr. Governors who dictate the abysmal conditions in which these children live - in the presence of a deadly pandemic. To most reasonable people, it would seem these "leaders" should pay a price for their arrogance and ignorance which they have so clearly demonstrated.
